Our community was shaken yesterday by the news of Greg Smith’s death.
Trying not to let the sadness overwhelm my thoughts, I’m reflecting on the powerful impression Greg left on each one of us. From one-time visitors to New Bern to lifelong friends, his positive, compassionate, and fun loving personality will always be remembered.
And although you may never have met Greg, his community leadership directly contributed to the economic development of Downtown New Bern!
While going thru all the photos and videos that I took over the years, I found the above one the most appropriate as a tribute to our dear friend.
Mitchell Hardware is a landmark and staple in our community…because of Greg. His passion was infectious! Whether you were greeted by Greg or not, his staff was his second family and always welcomed you with a hearty hello and asked if you needed help finding anything. Although they are heartbroken and overwhelmed, they opened for business this morning as Greg would’ve wanted.
He was one of the humblest men I know and didn’t do things to be recognized. He was driven to help others and make them happy.
Ten years ago, I asked Greg for his opinion whether I should start New Bern Now and he was one of my biggest supporters, mentor and sounding board ever since.
Let us pay tribute to Greg by being kind to each other and reaching out to those in need as our community grieves for him.
My deepest condolences are with his family and friends, may you find comfort and peace through the great pain and sadness by remembering all the wonderful times you had with Greg.
