CCC Foundation announces winners of 2017 Community Fabric Awards

Craven Community College Foundation to celebrate the winners of its 7th Annual Community Fabric Awards on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center from Noon – 1:30 p.m.

The Craven Community College (CCC) Foundation announces the winners of the 2017 Community Fabric Awards (CFA) for Excellence in Individual Leadership, Excellence in Business Leadership and Excellence in Education Leadership.

This is the seventh year that the annual awards have been held in honor of an individual, business and educator who excel in leadership as demonstrated by outstanding initiative, impact of service and inspiration of others. The proceeds from the Foundation’s premier fundraising event will support the college’s education initiatives. The award winners will be recognized at the CFA awards luncheon on Tuesday, April 18, from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center.

2017 Community Fabric Award Winners

Jim Congleton, DDS, MS, is the recipient of the Excellence in Individual Leadership Award. Congleton is a pediatric dentist located in New Bern. He has contributed to the health, beauty and culture of the community through his dental practice, philanthropy and service for almost 40 years. In his dental practice, as well as at the Merci Clinic, Congleton provides pediatric dental services to families in eastern North Carolina, including traveling to unserved areas where he provided care at no cost. As an arts collector and supporter, he added beauty to the landscape of the city and the college by commissioning and donating sculptures. He has been a supporter of organizations such as the Craven Arts Council & Gallery, Craven Community College Foundation, New Bern Civic Theatre, Public Radio East and Tryon Palace.

Century 21 Zaytoun-Raines, owned by Michael Raines, is the recipient of the Excellence in Business Leadership Award. Century 21 Zaytoun-Raines has been in operation in New Bern for over 50 years. According to their nomination application, “It has always been company policy to encourage representatives to be good citizens by aiding the community.” Examples of organizations that Century 21 Zaytoun-Raines and its agents have been involved with include the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, Craven Community College, New Bern Civic Theatre, New Bern Historical Society, Partners in Education, Easter Seals UCP and area Rotary Clubs. The company and its employees have contributed to their real estate profession and shared their professional expertise and time with the City of New Bern, New Bern Chamber of Commerce and Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation.

Mr. David Wang, assistant head of The Epiphany School of Global Studies, is the recipient of the Excellence in Education Award. Wang was involved with the 2006 founding of the private K-12 school in New Bern. Wang serves in teaching and coaching positions with the school. He received recognition as Coastal Independent Schools Conference Coach of the year in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 for swimming. In addition to his leadership position with the school, he also served on the board of the Twin Rivers YMCA. Wang is a National Board Certified Teacher in English and Language Arts. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Davidson College and a master of arts degree in school administration from East Carolina University.
