Do you ever wonder how many layers Martha Washington put on every morning? Or what the term “small clothes” meant? Perhaps you’re interested in the intricacies of a well-built pair of stays or a fashionably-cut gentleman’s coat. Learn about these questions and more during our lecture on clothing worn by men and women of the late 1770s.

Experience 18th-century fashion with a runway twist! Attend a fashion show that showcases the latest 18th-century fashion for all the classes.

Démodé Fashion Day, All Sites, Time Traveler’s Pass and Governor’s Pass cover all activities. Gardens and Galleries Pass covers only craft activities and dyeing demonstrations.
Come tour our historic buildings and learn about the clothing the Colonial Governors and their family, friends, and servants would have worn. There will also be fabric dyeing demonstrations on the Palace grounds and 18th-century fashion craft activities for the whole family in the North Carolina History Center.

Keeping Warm in the 18th Century – Make a Pair of Mitts Workshop, North Carolina History Center, Education Classroom, $10 per adult, $7 per student (includes $4 materials fee).
Come learn about lady’s gloves and mitts in the 18th century while making your very own pair! Wool felt will be used to construct a pair of fingerless gloves from an 18th-century pattern. Fun for modern wear too! All materials will be provided, and participants will take home their mitts and very own pattern. Some basic hand-sewing skills are helpful. Suggested age range is 12 through adult. Reservations and prepayment required by February 10th. Payments received after January 28th by credit card only. Call (252) 639-3524 to register. This special lecture will take a closer look as to how women’s undergarments have changed and developed from the heavily-boned stays of the 18th century through the first brassiere of the early 20th century.
