Neuse and Trent rivers at New Bern keep you out of a lot of weather.
Make the most of the fishing experience bring a variety of tackle.
Stripers will be the primary goal but a variety of fresh and saltwater fish can make the day.
Seatrout, red drum, flounder, largemouth bass, white perch, pickerel and crappie can all be found in the same places stripers will feed.
The New Bern area produces some jumbo panfish, white perch and crappie are big enough to eat some striper baits and with a quick switch to light or ultra light tackle can make for fun and a great meal.
Fishing 3 to 4 inch long soft plastic baits like DOA Cal jerk bait and shad tails on 1/4 ounce lead heads or 3 in Storm Wildeye shad can produce plenty of striper bites but on recent trips Capt. Gary Dubiel has also found plenty of white perch and crappies.
Once you catch a nice panifish switch over to the ultra light and enjoy putting a few “small” fish in the boat.
Hickory shad will start showing soon as well and also make a perfect target for that same light tackle.
