Gingerbread House
First time efforts following techniques presented in class

Prepare for 2018 Gingerbread House Contest!

The New Bern Historical Society realizes that building a gingerbread house can be a new experience.  So, they are presenting a class to help you learn how, and hoping that following the class, you’ll join in their Gingerbread House Contest.  The class will be held at Craven Community College on Friday, October 19 at 7pm.

In this one-hour class, under the guidance of Dawn Staats, you will   learn the basic knowledge needed to build and decorate your very own gingerbread house with no-fail dough and icing recipes. In addition to demonstrating how to make them so they hold up in our humid southern climate, she will share the tips and tricks for success developed over many years. After this class you’ll be ready for enter the contest. Cost for the class is $10. All proceeds go to support the contest awards. For more information or to register, go to NewBernHistorical.org/gingerbread/  or call 252-638-8558.

Executive Director Mickey Miller is looking forward to both the class and the contest. “The class will give you the practical application, then let your imagination go for the contest! Last year we had 32 entries from 5-year-olds to seniors and from first timers to pros. Folks were gathering at shop windows to see them.  That’s what we’re aiming for this year, to help bring people downtown.”

The New Bern Historical Society is sponsoring this second Gingerbread House Contest and Display as part of the festivities of Beary Merry Christmas downtown.  Folks are invited to make their own gingerbread house and enter it in the contest. Completed houses will be displayed at selected downtown merchants. There will be three categories for contestants:  Youth (up to 14), Adults, (age 15 and up), and Professionals (bakers, chefs, caterers, architects, engineers, cooks, etc.)  There will be cash prizes up to $250. A special prize, the Nancy Chiles Heritage Award, will be presented to the creation that best reflects the “Historic New Bern Christmas” theme.  The public will choose the winner of the People’s Choice award.  All who enter will receive a hand-crafted pottery ornament made by the Potters of the New Bern Art & Wellness Center. The deadline to enter is November 5th. Information and entry forms are on the New Bern Historical Society website NewBernHistorical.org/gingerbread/
