Tryon Palace Open Free to the Public on Annual Free Day

Free Day at Tryon PalaceFree access to Governor’s Palace, historic homes, and gardens Feb. 3

Tryon Palace is open free to the public during its annual Free Day on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can enjoy free tours of the Governor’s Palace, Kitchen Office, Stable Office, and Dixon and Stanly houses (limited to first floors), access to 16 acres of gardens and explore the trades of the past through crafts and activities.

During Free Day visitors can also learn about important historic trades and their modern counterparts, all while completing an “apprenticeship” and choosing which historic trade or job they would like to practice. Different trades demonstrations include blacksmiths, textiles, hairstyling, costuming, military, beekeeping, weaving and more.

The Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps will perform at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the South Lawn during Free Day. Firing demonstrations will follow.

Free Day is sponsored by the Harold H. Bate Foundation.

Tryon Palace grounds and the North Carolina History Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., however Free Day activities are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The free quilt exhibit, “Pieced with Care,” will be open to the public in the Duffy Exhibition Gallery at the North Carolina History Center, featuring works from the Twin Rivers Quilters Guild. Quilting demonstrations will take place at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Admission to the Pepsi Family Center and Regional History Museum are not included in Free Day activities. Visitors may purchase Galleries Passes on Free Day to experience the Pepsi Family Center and Regional History Museum inside the North Carolina History Center. Galleries Passes are $12 for adults and $6 for youth.
