Friday February 24, 2017, Peletah Ministries, a small church with a large community action and outreach mission, will honor a number of Social Justice advocates. Among the esteemed honorees are The Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, Jr., current President of the North Carolina NAACP and architect of the Moral Mondays in North Carolina and the Forward Together Movement that has spread to more than 18 states. Other honorees include Bob Hall, Executive Director of Democracy NC, the state’s most respected source of impartial data on the role of money in politics, voter participation and good government. Bob will be retiring in April after having served in the social justice arena since 1970. Also receiving an award is Anita Earls, noted civil rights attorney and Executive Director of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice; Courtney Patterson, Fourth Vice President of the North Carolina NAACP and renowned civil rights veteran and spokesperson; and, Mikki Sager, Vice President of Resourceful Communities. Mikki is responsible for program oversight, fundraising, partner support and scaling the Triple Bottom Line approaches that are helping communities generate economic, social and environmental returns. The group will commend Congressman G. K. Butterfield, who was unanimously elected as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus in 2014 for the 114th Congress. Born and raised in North Carolina has provided Congressman Butterfield a front-row seat in the civil rights struggle. Others to be recognized include: Christopher Suggs, CEO of Kinston Teens, Susan Husson, Executive Director of Interfaith Refugees, Craven County Commissioner Johnnie and Rev. Ethel Sampson and several others.
Senior Pastor Anthony J. Gibson and Executive Pastor Dawn Baldwin Gibson were inspired to hold this first annual event as a regional convening designed to re-inspire, reinvigorate and most important to honor the key individuals who have led North Carolina through several extremely difficult years in the arena of social justice.
The ceremony will take place on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 6:00 p.m., at The Harrison Center at Christ Church, 311 Middle Street, New Bern, NC 28560. Due to the anticipated large attendance, please reserve a free seat in advance by calling 252 259-8393. First-come, first-served.
