This year marks the 20th year that the Relay for Life of Craven County, our home grown part of the American Cancer Society’s largest annual fund raiser, will set up shop on April 25 and 26 at Grover C. Fields School. This event is open to the public, and especially welcomes members of our community whose lives have been touched by cancer. Dozens of teams of local businesses, school and church groups, communities and medical groups will be on hand to make and renew friendships, enjoy entertainment, and walk laps around the track at Grover C. Fields School to mark the purpose of Relay for Life:
1. To celebrate the victories made in peoples’ lives
2. To remember those lost
3. To fight back against cancer
Much more information can be found on the website, www.relayforlife.org/cravennc, including ways to make a donation to this event. The website also has information on two important events preceding the April 25/26 event:
* Restaurant Relay – Seventeen restaurants in Craven County have joined together with the Relay for Life event this year. On April 3, 4 & 5, each restaurant will contribute a portion of their proceeds to the Relay for Life event. Participating restaurants include 247 Craven, Sea Glass Café, Ribeyes Steakhouse of New Bern, Captain Ratty’s Seafood & Steakhouse, Lawsons Landing Café, Arturo’s Mexican Restaurant, Musashi Japanese Restaurant, Mario’s Pizza, Annabelle’s Restaurant & Pub, Moore’s BBQ, the Carolina Bagel Co. and Deli, Morgan’s Tavern & Grill, Bear Town Java Coffeehouse, Jersey Mike’s, Persimmons, Fairfield Harbor Food & Spirits, and Big Apple Pizzeria. No coupons, no fine print, just come out with friends and family to these restaurants on these three days, eat very well, and thank the restaurant for their participation in this community wide event.
* The annual Ice Cream Social will once again be held on April 10 at 5:30 PM at Morris Hall Ministry Center/Garber United Methodist Church. This event is for cancer survivors and one accompanying caregiver, with ice cream contributed by the Cow Café of New Bern. Survivors may pick up their Survivor’s T-shirt on the evening of this event, or at the Relay event on April 25 in the Survivor Tent.
Area residents are encouraged to purchase Luminarias and torches ahead of the event that will be lit during the evening. The Luminarias and torches line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.
