New Bern Man vs. USA on Bike!

April 7, 2012

My friend, Lisa Bisbee told me about a New Bern man who is getting ready to hop on his bike and ride across the US. Since I’m not a cyclist, my first thought was, he must be crazy. Then she told me he was going to do it without any money. I was very curious and impressed that I had to meet him! So I did. Bo Bissett is a very positive man with an adventurous spirit – Mr. Adventure! I really enjoyed learning more about his unique and challenging journey. He spent 6 years overseas teaching English in the […]

Four years ago the Craven Arts Council requested that the New Bern Airport partner with the ECU Art Department to design a unique program for Art students to promote their sculptures. Since then, ECU professors have charged their students with creating models to be displayed in front of the Airport. The requirements for sculptures were that they had to be aviation related and be able to sustain inclement weather for at least one year. […]

Ben Watford Shows You How to Throw Pottery!

December 10, 2011
Ben Watford

I had the pleasure of meeting Ben Watford, local potter and historian, last year when he gave me a tour of the Crockett-Miller Slave Quarters. Prior to meeting him, I didn’t know he was a well known potter. I was fascinated when he told me the story behind the “face jugs” that he’s known to create, among many other beautiful pottery items. During the days of slavery, slaves were dehumanized and when they died, they weren’t allowed to be respected with a tombstone or grave marker. Their family would place pottery jugs with trinkets in memory of their loved ones. […]

Alva’s biography: Alva Harris’s life has been a joust with the status quo. He claims that it will have been too short to learn all he’d like to know and experience within our wonderful universe. March 25, 2011

The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Authority in partnership with the East Carolina University’s (ECU) School of Art and Design reveals student art sculptures! Today’s “3rd Annual Art at the Airport” Event was an eye opener. I’ve seen the art sculptures at the Airport before, but had no idea of the story behind this interesting project. This unique venture gives ECU students a chance to exhibit their art to 134,000 travelers to and from the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport each year. The Airport Authority sends a jury to ECU each year to view models 10-12” tall of the student art sculptures. […]
