Children, birth to 12, and their parents are invited to attend Reading Fun Day at the New Bern Mall on Saturday, February 2nd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event which draws hundreds of children to the New Bern Mall for literacy activities each year is free to the public. Children who participate in at least four literacy activities at the event can receive a free book, while supplies last.
Eighteen public and private schools will provide literacy activities throughout the New Bern Mall. Literacy activities will also be provided to preschoolers in center court by Craven Smart Start, the Craven County Family Literacy Program and Early Childhood Education students from Craven Community College and the University of Mount Olive.
The preschool literacy area will also have information tables about Craven Smart Start’s Resource Lending Library and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a literacy program that provides a free book each month to children from birth up to their 5th birthday. Craven Smart Start staff will be available to register children for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program.
The event, which first began in 2005, is sponsored and coordinated by the Twin Rivers Council of the International Reading Association, Craven Smart Start, the Sun Journal’s Newspapers in Education (NIE) Program, and the New Bern Mall. For more information, contact Pinkie Moore at (252) 672-5921.
