Kayla Grace RuthAnne Hardee Receives Four Year Scholarship
The New Bern Historical Society presented its Harriett Marks Scholarship for 2018 to New Bern High School senior Kayla Grace RuthAnne Hardee at the New Bern Historical Society’s annual Awards Banquet held recently. Miss Hardee was selected from among a large group of talented and deserving applicants.
Miss Hardee, daughter of Vicki Renee Hardee and Jamie Clifton Hardee of New Bern, is a graduating senior at New Bern High School where she ranks number 20 in the senior class of 378 and has been involved in a number of school activities such as Future Farmers of America, Junior Civitan, Special Olympics Project Unify, the NBHS band, the Craven All-County band and the National Honor Society. She has also been involved in her church as a choir member, acolyte, usher, and member of the youth group. Kayla has volunteered in our community by packaging food for Stop Hunger Now, working in the RCS Soup kitchen, working with Craven County Schools Backpack Blessings, and ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.
Upon graduation Miss Hardee will attend North Carolina State University where she plans to major in animal science and then continue her studies in veterinary medicine.
The Marks Scholarship was established by a trust estate created in 1968 under the terms of the will of Miss Harriett Marks as a memorial to the O. Marks family (for which the downtown building is named). The scholarship goes to a senior graduating from New Bern High School for the purpose of obtaining higher education at an accredited college, university, or institution of higher learning. It can be used for tuition, board or lodging. Renewable for three succeeding years as long as academic standards are maintained, the scholarship provides financial assistance to a deserving senior based on a combination of financial need, scholarship and service to community and school. The Marks Scholarship furthers the Historical Society’s mission “to celebrate and promote New Bern and its heritage through events and education.” Offices are located in the historic Attmore-Oliver House at 511 Broad Street in New Bern.
