New Bern, NC – Faculty changes for the upper grades at Saint Paul Catholic School (SPCS) include a new addition to the team for Math and three teachers focusing on their specialties in English, Science, and Social Studies starting in August 2019.

School Administrator, Deacon David Kierski, announced that Mrs. Denise Holloman will join the SPCS staff as the upper school Math teacher.  Deacon Kierski noted three other assignment changes in grades 4th – 8th: Mr. James Moody will be responsible for English, Mrs. Merrie Edwards will be taking over Social Studies, and Mrs. Lynn Gaskins will be teaching Science.  Mr. Moody, Mrs. Edwards, and Mrs. Gaskins will remain as the core/homeroom teachers for the 4th grade students to provide a solid foundation as the students build their academic skills of self-reliance and responsibility.

Mrs. Holloman comes with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Secondary Education and 8 years of experience teaching elementary, middle, and college students.  Originally from Ohio, she relocated to North Carolina in 2007 and to New Bern in 2011.

English teacher Mr. Moody is a Raleigh native who spent part of his academic career teaching at private boarding schools in the United Kingdom. He has been with SPCS since 2016 and has creative ways bringing classic literature to life for his students.

Mrs. Edwards will bring a worldly perspective to her Social Studies classes, as she is a retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant who traveled to many nations and historic sites during her enlistment.  Her classes will delve into local, national, and world history and culture.

After 30 years of teaching Science at New Bern High School (NBHS), Mrs. Gaskins decided she was not quite ready to leave the classroom. In 2018, she came to SPCS as a substitute teacher and enthralled her students by showing them how science is all around them. She now joins the faculty full time for the upper grades and is likely to encounter the children of her former NBHS students.

As the newest member of the faculty, Mrs. Holloman can’t wait to get started at SPCS.  “I am thrilled to be part of the Saint Paul team.  I was instantly attracted to the family-like atmosphere of SPCS as well as the mission of the school to help each child strive to reach his/her full potential not only through a rich and rigorous academic program but also through support, encouragement, and love for the whole child.  I am excited to share my passion for mathematics with my students and to help them understand the value of mathematics in their daily lives.”

Saint Paul Catholic School offers a rigorous and classical curriculum to prepare children for a lifetime of learning and leadership built on a solid foundation of faith. SPCS students, from PreK3 through 8th grade, learn to listen carefully, explore fully, and think critically.
