Kimberly Thi Tran Receives Four Year Scholarship
NEW BERN, N.C. – The New Bern Historical Society is pleased to announce its Harriett Marks Scholarship for 2019 to New Bern High School senior Kimberly Thi Tran. Miss Tran was selected from among a large group of talented and deserving applicants.
Miss Tran, daughter of Thann Tran and Suong Tran of New Bern, is a graduating senior at New Bern High School where she is Valedictorian ranking number 1 in the senior class of 409 and will graduate with both her High School Diploma and an Associate of Arts Degree. She has held the number 1 position in her class throughout her high school career. Kimberly has been involved in a number of school activities such as Interact and Peer Tutoring. She has managed several sports teams including football, basketball and lacrosse. Kimberly is a member of the National Honor Society, is the recipient of the Harvard Book Award and was Leading Junior Marshall.
Upon graduation Miss Tran will attend University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She has not yet declared a major but hopes to work in the medical field, to work helping people and to be able to “put a smile on someone’s face.” Kimberly will be the first in her family to attend college.
The Marks Scholarship was established by a trust estate created in 1968 under the terms of the will of Miss Harriett Marks as a memorial to the O. Marks family (for which the downtown building is named). The scholarship goes to a senior graduating from New Bern High School for the purpose of obtaining higher education at an accredited college, university, or institution of higher learning. It can be used for tuition, board or lodging. Renewable for three succeeding years as long as academic standards are maintained, the scholarship provides financial assistance to a deserving senior based on a combination of financial need, scholarship and service to
community and school. The Marks Scholarship furthers the Historical Society’s mission “to celebrate and promote New Bern and its heritage through events and education.” Offices are located in the historic Attmore-Oliver House at 511 Broad Street in New Bern.
