Craven County Board of Education and James W. Smith Elementary spotlighted Ms. Ruthie Brown, a teacher who has an adventurous spirit, combined with a love for teaching and learning which sets the stage for excellence. This teacher sets the stage for providing a positive learning and working environment, not only for the students, but also for her peers. She consistently bases her instructional strategies on the level of the learner and is constantly looking for new and innovative means for achieving and integrating curriculum goals and expectations. Ms. Brown’s leadership qualities are evident throughout her involvement at the school level with other staff and community members that are essential pieces in helping move James W. Smith Elementary School forward. She is the type of individual who models the tenets of a professional educator not only for James W. Smith Elementary School, but also for Craven County Schools.
Ruthie Brown, Physical Education teacher at James W. Smith Elementary School jumped head first into her position and it was as if she had been at our school for years on end. She constantly goes the extra mile to develop relationships with our students that extend far beyond that of “just a teacher”. Her students know they are special to her and that she cares about them as individuals. She uses these relationships to foster a unique learning community where teacher and students work together to achieve what is important. We proudly take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on her as she continues to share her sunshine with the students and staff at James W. Smith Elementary School.
