City of New Bern hires Assistant City Manager

The City of New Bern announces the hiring of Kristen Culler as Assistant City Manager. Kristen (Krissy) was previously employed with the State of North Carolina as Deputy State Chief Information Officer/Chief Administrative Officer/Chief Financial Officer with the Department of Information Technology in Raleigh.

After a thorough process of reviewing nearly three-hundred resumes and assessing several qualified and talented candidates, Mrs. Culler rose to the top with extensive experience in state and federal government, service in the military, and commitment to community.

“Mrs. Culler demonstrates stellar leadership skills and a has proven numerous times a remarkable ability to adapt to any challenging work environment she has been presented with and produce excellent results while doing so. Additionally, our interview panels were impressed by her work history with state and federal organizations,” said Mark Stephens, City Manager. “She has spent her life dedicated to service and committed to the public good, which is evident in her work history and military experience. It is her desire to continue that commitment to service for our community here in New Bern.” In addition to her extensive state and federal employment experience, Mrs. Culler served ten years in the U.S. Navy as an F-14 Tomcat pilot and as part of the faculty and staff at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She joined the State of North Carolina in 2013.

Kristen Culler graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. She earned her Master’s Degree in Leadership and HR Development from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. A native North Carolinian, Mrs. Culler grew up in Charlotte and attended the NC School of Science and Mathematics before starting her Navy career.

“We’re excited to welcome Mrs. Culler to New Bern and have her as a member of our team,” said Mr. Stephens. “Her knowledge, skills, and abilities will be a valuable asset to this community and her experience in the military will also serve as a valuable asset given our rich military history here in New Bern and eastern North Carolina.”

Kristen Culler will join the City of New Bern on April 11th. Her annual salary will be $128,000.
