Goshen Medical Center in New Bern is one of more than 20 federally qualified healthcare centers (FQHCs) operated by Goshen Medical Center, Inc., which was established in 1979. Every state has federally qualified healthcare centers, which are sometimes referred to as community health centers. FQHCs have been in existence since 1975 and are what is often referred to as “the government’s best kept secret”. What is a FQHC and what makes us unique? A FQHC opens its doors to the public, both insured and uninsured patients. FQHCs are community based, non-profit organizations that are usually governed by a board of directors, and receive federal funding to serve under-insured and uninsured populations. FQHCs provide access to comprehensive, quality primary care and to specialty care services as available. FQHCs are required to provide a federally based sliding fee scale that is based on household size and income level for those who are without insurance.
At the New Bern Business Expo we had the opportunity to meet wonderful people and business owners from the community. Among some questions that we were asked, people wanted to know if we were affiliated with clinics in Goshen, NY, Goshen, CT and Goshen, IN. It is always interesting to hear of other “Goshens”, but no, we are not affiliated, as we are a private, non-profit 501 (c)(3) federally qualified and community based health center. The land of Goshen historically refers to a land of comfort and plenty. It has also been known as a light shining in the darkness. For anyone who has been without insurance and had a healthcare need, it can indeed be very difficult times. We want to be that light shining in the darkness that helps you with access to quality healthcare when you need it.
