Celebrating Police/Community Partnerships

New Bern, NC – Tuesday, August 2, National Night Out is being celebrated around the country and New Bern is no exception. Community volunteers in partnership with New Bern Police Department will host a ‘great night out’ of fun, entertainment and education for all ages. 5:00pm – 8:30pm at Union Point Park.

About National Night Out
NATW (National Association of Town Watch) a nonprofit crime prevention organization, works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies throughout the country. In 1984 the Association introduced National Night Out (NNO), ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime’. While the traditional ‘lights on’ and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years.

New Bern is celebrating the evening with emcee Dominic Brown, Meteorologist, WCTI TV 12. Beginning at 5:00pm, the opening ceremony will be held at 5:30pm. There is music entertainment by Crystal Coast Band, food vendors, a misting station, raffle drawings, local law enforcement displays, K-9’s and other event demonstrations, games for kids, a puppet show, face painting, a bounce house and more.

Community service organizations will provide information, free handouts and displays. Book bags will be given away to school age children at the closing ceremony.

Bring your flashlight and join us for a walk thru the downtown streets at 7:45pm, lead by New Bern Police. Shine a light and take a stand against crime. If you can’t make it to the NNO event, please turn your porch light on to represent your support in the efforts to stand against crime.

The event provides a way for people to come together and learn ways to get involved in protecting your community through education in anti-crime programs, strengthening partnerships with law enforcement, promoting health and safety, and community watch programs. You will get to know the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping make neighborhoods safer by expanding programs and developing relationships.

For three years in a row, New Bern has been recognized as a national award winner for its outstanding participation in National Night Out.

Join us Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Union Point Park, 5:00pm to 8:30pm. Bring the kids, a lawn chair, and enjoy music, activities, education, and ‘a great night out.’ Get to know your neighbors!

Pets are not allowed in Union Point Park during the time of the event.

We welcome residents to join our NNO Committee every Thursday at 6:30pm at the New Bern Police Substation in the New Bern Mall.
