>West Street Elementary and J.T. Barber High School Alumni are hosting a large Reunion from July 2 – 5, 2010.
Events will kick-off Friday evening at 7:00pm with a dinner at the Flame Catering and Banquet Centre, 2301 Neuse Blvd, New Bern.
Saturday, the Alumni will meet for the Bi-annual meeting at JT Barber Elementary School. Following the meeting, they will install a historic roll sign marker. After the installation, they will move to Cedar St. where the 1st black indoor gymnasium was built by a teacher and students. Then they will install another roll sign marker. Both sites are part of the National Historic Registry.
Worship services are planned for Sunday (tentatively scheduled for 10:00am) in the J.T. Barber Elementary School Auditorium. At 3:00pm, Alumni will unite for a cookout at Creekside Recreational Park on Old Airport Rd. in James City.
The Reunion will conclude with a breakfast brunch at Beatrice Riggs Smith’s house, 1700 Chestnut Ave in the Pembroke area.
The Alumni is currently developing a souvenir journal highlighting the history of the segregated West Street Elementary School and J.T. Barber High School.
