Assuming I would easily get a parking spot for this afternoon’s “Light Up the Season Celebration”, I drove Downtown around 2pm. What was I thinking? It was Black Friday. I didn’t mind walking because it was a terrific sight to see all the visitors and residents supporting our local businesses!
As 4pm approached, the crowd gathered in Bear Plaza. Parents brought their children to enjoy crafts, fun-filled activities, and most of all, to see Santa Claus! It turned out to be a gathering place for locals to catch up on the latest happenings and visitors to get to know our quaint town.
The celebration kicked off with Garber United Methodist Church’s Choir Ensemble singing caroles and girls from Wanda Kay’s School of Dance and Get The Pointe Dance Studio danced to Christmas music, setting the holiday mood as Santa Claus brought up the rear in a horse drawn carriage.

Joe Alcoke Chevrolet and his team were proud to sponsor this special event and thanked the crowd. First Ward Alderman Sabrina Bengel welcomed the spectators, urged everyone to support local businesses and thanked us for participating in this fun-filled event. Then Santa, accompanied by his “Help Tiny Tim Contest Winner”, Marshall Jordan, flipped the switch to “Light Up the Season”!
Visit Santa and have your picture taken with him (for $5) at Bear Plaza on Friday’s: 4 – 8pm; Saturday’s: 10am – 5pm; and Sunday’s noon – 4pm at Bear Plaza through December 24th: 10am – 2pm.
“Leave Santa a letter with your “wish list” and return address in Santa’s Mail Box, and Santa will answer all letters to good girls and boys! While visiting Santa, drop off a toy for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program or canned food for the Religious Community Service (RCS). Note, drop offs will only be accepted when the Santa House is open.” – “A Dickens of a Christmas Blog”
