Lonnie Edward Pridgen, Jr., 87, New Bern, NC
Lonnie Edward Pridgen, Jr., an outstanding community leader, passed away peacefully at his home on December 26, 2020. He was born In New Bern on March 8, 1933, to parents Lonnie and Bettie Pridgen. He married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Taylor, February 28, 1953, and together, they raised four children. He attended East Carolina University before moving to Greensboro to work for Commercial Credit.
Lonnie and Shirley returned to New Bern in 1960 and, in partnership with lifelong friend Tommy Karam, they established Tryon Developers and Tryon Realty. Over the years they developed numerous office and commercial properties in Eastern NC including McCarthy Square. Residential sub-divisions include: Southgate, Stately Pines, Pinedale, Bryan’s, and Old Towne.
As a visionary, his strong interest and concern for his fellow man and the betterment of Craven County led to a lifetime of leadership and community service. Lonnie was a charter member of the Craven County Economic Development Commission and Committee of 100. During his tenure as Chairman, to attract manufacturing companies and jobs to the area he was instrumental in the acquisition and development of the Craven County Industrial Park at Clarks which is now home to 16 major employers, including BSH Home Appliance, Craven Wood Energy, and Moen.
He retired as Captain after 20 years of service in the NC Army-National Guard, and in the post WWII years, he spent two years in Germany, when under the Truman Doctrine, the Army National Guard was activated to provide military assistance to a war-torn Europe.
During his 12 years as a Commissioner on the Craven County Board of Commissioners, he served on many governmental committees and entities affiliated with Craven County and served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of Carolina East Health System.
When downtown was at its lowest point in the late 1970’s and early 80’s, as risk takers, Lonnie and his partner were enthusiastic supporters of the downtown revitalization effort. They bought and rehabilitated the deteriorated Clark’s Building, the four-story Dunn Building, and with three other partners, purchased and completed the major rehab of the vacant Belk’s building, now known as O. Marks. He was a long-term member of the Swiss Bear Board of Directors, served as Chairman for five years, and also served on the U.S. Highway 17 Committee, and the Craven, Pamlico, Carteret, and Jones County Transportation Committee that led to the construction of the new Neuse River Bridge.
A lifelong Democrat, he chaired many Democratic Campaigns and was the champion behind past Governor Beverly Perdue’s entrance into the political arena.
A devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church, Lonnie served on the Vestry several times and was actively involved in the management of The Bishop Home. He was a generous man who was quick to support projects that would enhance the community. Most recently, to preserve the beauty of the Olde Towne subdivision, he deeded property he owned to the homeowner’s association. Lonnie Pridgen was a man for all seasons. His legacy is that of a man who was committed to his community, his family, and friends. He was a caring soul. He will be missed.
Lonnie is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Ginnie Pridgen Tetreault; son, W. Michael Pridgen; grandchildren, James Michael Pridgen, Nicholas Alexander Pridgen, and Kristen Sullivan; great-grandson, Evan Taylor Pridgen, and many nieces and nephews.
Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Bettie Pridgen; his daughter, Terri Pridgen Lacy, his son, Lonnie Stephen Pridgen; brother, Charles Thomas Pridgen; sisters Sue Catherine Pridgen, Minnie Louise Pridgen Harper, Bettie Gene Pridgen and his granddaughter, Chloe Tetreault.
A private family service will be held on January 5, 2020 at 1 pm at Christ Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at 2 pm in the Parish House. Audrey B. Rolison, 92, New Bern, NC
Mrs. Audrey B. Rolison, 92, quietly passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020 with family by her side. A native of New York, Audrey spent most of her life in Pamlico County. She was a special needs teacher by profession but loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother most of all. She was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. An avid gardener, she was fond of tending the flower beds of her church in her later years. She was a volunteer Gray Lady at Carolina East Medical Center for many years and will be remembered for her kindness and generosity.
Sadly, Audrey was preceded in death by her husband George of over fifty years, and her sons Dennis and Michael.
Audrey is survived by her three sons, Barry Rolison, and wife Ann, of Raleigh; Jerry Rolison, and wife Cathy, of Clayton; and Kevin Rolison, and wife Cecelia, of New Bern. She also leaves behind her nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; her half-brother, Gary Harrison, and her half-sister, Sandra Duca, both of Alliance.
The family will receive friends 6:00 PM, Sunday, January 3, 2021 with a Rosary to follow at 7 p.m., at Pollock~Best Funeral Home. Mrs. Linda Strickland Loyd, 82, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020. A native of Johnston County, NC, Linda was a medical transcriptionist for many years, and was a loving wife and mother. Matthew Charles Rettew, 81, New Bern, NC
Matthew Charles Rettew, 81, longtime resident of New Bern, NC, passed away peacefully at home on December 7, 2020.
Mr. Rettew is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eleanor; daughters Joanna Britt (Jim), Karin Deering (Randy), Linda O’Neal (Chris), and Cheryl Montgomery. Also left to cherish his memory are 13 adoring grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons, Gerald and Patrick (Yolanda) Rettew, and his brother, John E. Rettew.
Born on February 10, 1939 in Washington, DC to the late Matthew A. Rettew and Eleanor C. Zielie, “Chuck” proudly served on the Washington, DC police force for 13 years, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. After switching careers, Chuck worked in the computer field for the United States Government for 17 years, becoming a GS-14 Program Chief for the Department of the Army. During that time, he enjoyed spending countless hours supporting his daughters as they excelled in gymnastics, ballet, singing, and cheerleading. His children frequently sought out his advice, inherited his notable work ethic, and could always count on one of his infamous “Chuckisms” to bring a smile or a groan.
Chuck and his wife retired to New Bern in the late 1990’s, where they made many wonderful friends, hosted parties and spent several days a week golfing for many years. Chuck also served for a time as the President of the Pinehurst Place Garden Club and was a member of the Emerald Golf Club. Chuck took great joy and pride in watching his childrens’ families grow over the years, and enjoyed spending time with his children and their families. His children fondly remember the times during their childhood where their father would play beautiful classical arrangements on the piano and sing and play his guitar. He loved sports, especially motor sports, football, and golf. A lifelong Washington Redskins football fan, he was sure to pass his love of the team on to his children. Additionally, he cheered on the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Texas A&M Aggies in support of his children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Parker was born in Craven County, on August 14, 1924, the daughter of the late George and Sally Bray. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Lucille Pittman, Ward Bray and Dick Bray. Mrs. Parker is survived by her sons Joseph Christopher Parker and wife Lynne of Shelby, NC; George Randolph Parker and wife Lou Ann of Henderson, NC, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Parker was a partner with her husband in marriage for sixty-seven years. During those years, she helped raise their two sons, taught Sunday School classes for children, sang in church choirs, worked in multiple ladies’ groups, and further supported her husband in all areas of the ministry, serving Methodist churches in eastern North Carolina.

Marjorie V. Bottone, 84, died Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Brookdale Assisted Living Center.
She was born February 4, 1936, daughter of the late Willie Allison and Stella Lee Sellers Varnam.
She was a fun and creative mom and wife, who had a great sense of humor, loved to read (some say she was a walking encyclopedia), and loved to cook, especially sweets and her upside down pineapple cake was a family favorite. She also volunteered for Craven County Hospice.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A. Joseph Bottone and a grandson, D. Joseph McGraw, her brother, Eunice Varnam.
She is survived by her daughters, Angela Spruill, and husband Danny, of New Bern, Julia Bottone of New Bern and Diana Bottone of New Bern; her brother, Bennie Varnam, and wife Judy, of Louisiana; her three grandchildren, Steven McGraw of New Bern, Patrick Dundr of Ohio; and Alexandra DiBella and husband Andrew, of New Bern; and her great-grandchildren, William and Ethan McGraw, Ashlie McGraw, Ava DiBella, and Thea Dundr.

David James Linaberry, 79, New Bern, NC
David James Linaberry, 79, formerly of McCormick, SC and Longswamp Township, PA passed away at home surrounded by loved ones. He was the husband of Wendy (Loomis). They would have been married 41 years this month. David was born in Bethlehem to David W. Linaberry and Dorothy (Neith). He graduated from Liberty High School, Moravian College and received his Masters in Education from Lehigh University. He served his country in the US Army Medical Corps stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, TX.
He taught 5th and 6th grade at Fogelsville Elementary School for 30 years. He loved teaching so much, he never felt he had a “job”. He loved going to school everyday and felt each student was special. David was also an accomplished artist and wood carver having studied with wildlife artist Fred Wetzel and carver Tom Ahern.
Upon retiring from teaching, David worked for Dorney Park as an independent contractor restoring and painting the park’s carousel. David discovered his love of Rugby, playing for the Allentown Blues from 1968 to 1980, followed by motorcycle enduro riding with the L.V. Dirt Riders. Skiing and bicycling were also a huge part of his life. He skied all over the US, Canada, and Europe. Bicycling, he rode countless century rides, the 5 Burroughs Ride of New York many times and his most recent long ride was from St. Augustine, FL, down A1A to Ft. Pearce, across Lake Okeechobee on to Punta Gorda, with his wife and brother-in-law, Gregory Loomis. He was an avid hunter and passed this love onto his son and was a hunting mentor for several years to at-risk youth at the John DeLaHowe school in McCormick, SC.

Jeramy D. Szymanski, Havelock, NC
SSgt Jeramy D. Szymanski, USMC Ret. died Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at his home. A native of Polk County, AR, Jeramy loved the Marine Corps and retired after honorably serving his country. Jeramy was a highly decorated Marine receiving the following awards; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, NATO Medal ISAF Afghanistan, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Meritorious Mast, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation-Navy, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corp Recruiting Ribbon, and Recruiter of the Quarter RS Oklahoma City, among many others. He was the son of Daniel J. and Barbara L. Szymanski. In Arkansas, he was a member and Master Mason of Belle Point Masonic Lodge and a member of the Amrita Grotto. In his spare time, Jeramy enjoyed playing his guitar, going to the gym, spending time outside and building things. His greatest joy was his little girl Ava, who is affectionately known as his “Mini-me”. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Joseph Szymanski, and many of his fellow Marines.

Helen Shepherd Friend, New Bern, NC
Helen Shepherd Friend died peacefully at 102 years old on November 10, 2020 at Pruitt Trent in New Bern, NC. Helen was born on April 17, 1918 in Jersey City, NJ to Richard Kemp Shepherd and Ellen Meiklejohn.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Friend of Jensen Beach, Fl; and sons, Richard Friend of New Bern, NC and Paul Friend MD. of Bedford, NH; four grandchildren, Amanda, Spencer, Kevin and Paul; and four great-grandchildren.
Helen’s appreciation of education led her to return to college in 1966 receiving her BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Rhode Island. She later became the Chief Clinical Dietician for Roger Williams General Hospital in Providence. Helen encouraged her children’s education and was very proud of all of the degrees earned by her children and grandchildren.
Helen’s fearless nature led her on many adventures. During the WWII she ran an Inn in New Milford CT, then joined the Red Cross Overseas Assn. and ran an orphanage in Busan, Korea, where she met her future husband Paul.
While raising their three children Helen and Paul lived in Italy, Germany, and England, returning to reside in East Greenwich, RI in 1960. After her husband died in 1999, Helen, at age 81, traveled to China, journeyed up the Yangtzee River, and visited Tibet. Helen later continued her adventures with trips to Europe and the Caribbean with her children and grandchildren. Helen enjoyed exercise, participating in Zumba through her 90’s, and was also an avid gardener.
Helen moved to New Bern in 2016 to live near her son and daughter-in-law (Richard and Jean).

Gary Edward Holman, 82, New Bern, NC
Gary Edward Holman, 82, passed on November 6, 2020, at Carolina East Medical Center, New Bern, NC. Born in Port Angeles, WA, son of Gordon and Violet Holman.
He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and retired as Senior Chief Petty Officer (ADCS) serving three combat sea deployments to the Vietnam Theater, once aboard the USS Coral Sea and twice aboard USS Midway. He earned both the Vietnam Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. After retirement, he continued working in civil service at NADEP Cherry Point, NC.
Most of all, he cherished his wife Glenda of 52 years, loved his family, and had deep passions that included cars (nothing he couldn’t fix), planes (he knew them all) and family trips (don’t make me pull this car over!) Nieces and nephews recall Uncle Gary fondly as the trendsetter for thousands of future America’s Funniest Home Video clips of “put the rubber band around the sink squirter” so Grandma will get sprayed when she turns on the water, followed by secretly untying her apron strings and waiting for apron to fall off. Younger siblings remember fun times with him going on picnics at the Dungeness River, Olympic Hot Springs, Hurricane Ridge, Hood Canal, and Jamestown. But most of all, it was his day to day presence as an anchor for his family, providing love and stability. Everyone loved Gary, he was quiet but fun loving and full of surprises. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, friend, and decorated Veteran. A true hero to so many and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Glenda Holman, sons Tim Gladding, David Gladding, Jason Holman, Matthew Holman, and daughter Kimberly Finney. Grandchildren Janet Souza-Gladding, Eric Gladding, Adam Holman, Zachary Holman, Chelsea Helkowski, Nicholas Gladding, Isaiah Finney and Oliver Finney; and four great grandchildren Stella Souza, Wyatt Holman, little Gary Holman and Ariana Helkowski; brother Michael Holman and sister Patricia Bourm; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Paul Joseph “Joe” Merriman, 72, New Bern, NC
Paul Joseph “Joe” Merriman, 72, passed suddenly of a heart attack on November 4, 2020 in New Bern, his beloved community in retirement of more than 15 years. A voracious reader, lifelong learner and community supporter, he never met a stranger. He loved nature, sunsets by the water, a good game of pool and glass of pinot noir. He led a full and family-centered life, hosting/attending events and celebrations large and small, while also cultivating many close and sustained friendships that lasted his lifetime.
He was born on April 29, 1948 in Syracuse, NY to parents Paul Francis and Mary Ellen Merriman (Aungier), grew up in The Valley and attended Our Lady of Lourdes parish. A graduate of Christian Brothers Academy (66’) he attended SUNY Morrisville as a Regents Scholar.
Paul spent his professional career in the insurance industry, first at General Accident where he met his wife of 49 years Cheryl, and then for 35 years at Nationwide Insurance. He helped open new field offices and led several different business units through his career, earning both his CAM and CPCU designations, the highest achievements in that industry. His career brought he and his family to many different cities including Memphis, TN, Gainesville, FL, Raleigh, NC, San Juan, PR and Columbus, OH.
Paul was an active member of several organizations, including the New Bern Historical Society, Carteret County Wildlife Club (Past President), Newcomers Club of New Bern, Fairfield Harbour Community Watch (Treasurer), and the Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club.
Paul is survived by his wife Cheryl (Nelson) of New Bern; daughter, Sara of Philadelphia, PA; son Chris (Jacqueline) of Raleigh; brother James (Beth) of Seattle, WA; sister Julie Young (Tracy) of Charlotte, brother-in-law James Capo of Manhattan, NY; his grandchildren, Evan, Ava, Wesley and Spencer, as well as aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edith Evonne Crafton Carver, 71, New Bern, NC
Edith Evonne Crafton Carver, 71, of New Bern went to be with the Lord Sunday, November 1, 2020, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 29, 1949, in Williamson County, TN. She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Blythe and Katherine Elise Stevens Crafton; and brother James Herbert Crafton. Evonne was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who gave of her heart and time and is survived by her husband of 54 years Robert Lee “Bobby” Carver; her dear children Karen Carver Bennion, and husband Vic Warner, of Zebulon; Christopher Lee Carver, and wife Kristin, of Cary; and Kellie Carver Anderson, and husband Rick, of New Bern. She also leaves behind her six grandchildren, Calvin, Rilie, Jude, Carson, Henley, and Sterling; along with her two sisters, Betty Andrews, of Smyrna, TN, and Benita Kyle, and husband Stephen, of Germantown, TN.
Evonne was an avid reader who loved American and local history. Her pursuit and passion for the Holy Bible gave her the Spirit of God, knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Her insight allowed her to share and lead numerous Bible studies where she connected with life long friends. Evonne and Bobby raised their family in Jacksonville. Upon retiring from Onslow County Finance Department, after twenty years of service, they relocated to New Bern.
A celebration of Evonne’s life will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 7, 2020, at Temple Church with Reverend Jim Pennington officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the church. Rosemarie Newton Roper, 74, New Bern, NC
Rosemarie Newton Roper (“Rose”), 74, died peacefully on October 26, 2000, at Brookdale Assisted Living after a period of declining health.
Rose was born to Elizabeth Wiss on July 15, 1946, in Wiesbaden, Germany. Several years later, Rose and her mother immigrated to the United States and settled in Burke County, North Carolina. Rose was a 1964 graduate of Morganton High School and went on to pursue a legal studies degree from Blanton’s Jr. College in Asheville, North Carolina. Following graduation, Rose went to work as a paralegal at the law firm of Patton, Craven, and Ervin, PA, in Morganton, North Carolina where she had the pleasure of working with future federal appellate judges, J. Braxton Craven, Jr. and Samuel J. Ervin, III, along with her mentor Thomas M. Starnes.
In the late 1960s, Rose met the love of her love, Harold Edward Roper. Rose and Harold were married in 1970 and soon relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina. After a few years, Rose and Harold relocated to New Bern where they stayed to raise their family. During her early life in New Bern, Rose was often found at numerous ballfields in the area watching her son, Jason, play sports, volunteering in the New Bern Schools, or engaging in activities at West New Bern Presbyterian Church. In later life, Rose was active in assisting refugees relocate to New Bern to have a better life, the Pilot Club, Crop Walk, and spending time with her numerous friends. Throughout her life, Rose was an animal lover who was known to adopt any animal that needed a home even if it meant a getting a laughable remark from her husband “another one?”
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Harold. Rose is survived by her son, Jason and his wife Teresa of Lexington, Kentucky. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Hannah and Ella, who she absolutely adored and loved more than anything. Rose is also survived by two brothers, John Newton of Rutherfordton, North Carolina and Manfred Wiss of Wiesbaden, Germany. Rose is also survived by her brother in law, Richard Roper and his wife Barbara along with their daughter, Robin.
The family would like to thank Web Slaughter, Naomi Morris, Trudy Nelson, Pauline Blair, and Norma Kelly who were great friends to Rose during the final years of her life. Finally, the family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living who provided the best care to her during the past year.
On Thursday, October 29, 2020, a visitation will be held at Pollock-Best Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a celebration of life event will be held at a later date, in lieu of a funeral. In lieu of flowers or any other memorials, the family asks that memorials be made to the Colonial Capital Humane Society .

Sina Lockey Zubia, 59, New Bern, NC
Sina Lockey Zubia, 59, passed away Friday October 23, 2020 at her family home with her daughter by her side. Sina was a longtime resident of Pamlico County, where she was a 1979 graduate of Pamlico County High School. After graduation, Sina moved to Dallas,TX, where she graduated from Nursing School and received the Nightingale Award. Sina had three sons and a daughter and they were her everything. She was happily married for 33 amazing years to her husband, Paul. Sina was loved by many, had a big heart, and would alway open her home to anyone. Her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren; to them she was “Nanny”. She will be greatly missed. Sadly, Sina was preceded in death by her three sons, John Paul Zubia, Daniel S. “Buddha” Rios, Santiago “CJ” Rios, Jr.; her father,Virgil Usher Lockey and her mother, Virginia Rae Lockey.
Sina is survived by her husband, Rosario (Paul) Zubia; daughter, Christina “Cha-Cha” Zubia (Hector Olguin); her brother, Virgil Lockey (Wendy Lockey); and her sister Frankie Resendiz, She is also survived by her grandchildren, Makayla Rae Rios, Yazmin-Rae Guadalupe Olguin, Leland Ray Rios, Yianelli Rae Olguin, Marcos Luis Garcia Jr., Michael Noah Garcia, Collin Cash Cuthrell-Zubia, Selena, Jayla, Erick, Aliana, Analise, Chris, Alina, JR, Malanies, Claren, JD, CJ, Leviah, and Kolby; and many nieces and nephews.

Maxine Keel Tingle Tyndall, 83, New Bern
Maxine Keel Tingle Tyndall, 83, of New Bern died Monday, October 19, 2020 in Raleigh following a long illness. A native of Pamlico County, Maxine lived in Trent Woods from 1973 until 2017. Her career as a Social Worker spanned 40 years having worked in Durham, Onslow and Craven counties with the Department of Social Services. After retirement, she worked at Craven Regional Medical Center as a discharge planner and was a hospice worker for many years. Maxine had a passion for sewing, doing needlepoint and cross-stitch. She was known for her willingness to accept responsibility, her tenacity and her commitment to helping others. Maxine was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she enjoyed volunteering and serving as a wedding planner.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 10AM at Pollock-Best Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bryan Huffman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. David is preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Marilee who passed away last month; he is survived by daughters Susan Wallace and partner William Clemons of Stafford, VA and Brenda Fasone and husband Jim of Bowie, MD; three grandchildren James Fasone, Joseph Fasone, and Rachel RisCassi; and six beautiful great-grandchildren Ava, Jack, Louise, Jake, Matthew and Frankie whom he frequently bragged about to friends.
David Franklin Wallace IV was born August 29, 1929 in Memphis, TN. He saved his own money for flight lessons and at age 17 obtained his FAA pilot license. He joined the Air Force at age 18 and enjoyed being an aircraft mechanic at Perrin Air Force Base in TX. Next was graduation from Bliss Electrical Institute in Takoma Park, MD and marriage to his high school sweetheart Marilee in Wilmington, NC. A career in telecommunication led him from Tidewater Power Company in North Carolina, to Western Electric in New York, and finally to AT&T in Colorado and Maryland. One of David’s initial tasks involved radio site determination for the nation’s first computer-controlled air defense system called SAGE. In 1965, David was in charge of reviewing researcher Paul Baran’s early proposal for what would go on to become the ARPANET and finally the Internet as we know it. On assignment in the South Pacific, David was a transmission engineer on a secure communications system called “Talk Quick” for field grade officers during the Vietnam War. By 1975, David was working at the White House Office of Telecommunication Policy. In 1984, after 33 years of service, David retired from the D.C. Metro area and bee-lined with Marilee for the fishing, boating and relaxation of River Bend.
What began as a hobby of repairing and selling old bikes and a challenge to himself to ride 100 miles every month, became the joy of riding over 100,000 miles in his lifetime which he liked to point out was 4 times around the earth. He continued cycling 10-15 miles each week at age 91. Many of those miles were with his friends in the New Bern Century Cyclists. He won 32 medals cycling the Senior Olympics at local, state and national levels and only quit when there was no longer competition in his age group. If he couldn’t be on his bike, he was on his computer and was one of the founders of the New Bern Computer Users Group. Although he never learned to read music, he played the fiddle, mandolin, banjolin and harmonica by ear. Every Friday night Dad was smiling and tapping his foot playing with his friends at Pickin’ and Grinnin’. He was an inspiration to many and loved by all.

Jacque Ellen Baucom Boyd, 73, New Bern
Jacque Ellen Baucom Boyd, 73, died Monday, October 12, 2020 at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was born June 13, 1947 in Raleigh, daughter of the late Roger E. Baucom and Mavis Elizabeth Bisette Baucom. Mrs. Boyd was a member of Cornerstone Assembly of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Boyd; her son, David Byrum; and her stepdaughter, Susan Boyd.
She is survived by her son Thomas Goodrich of Cove City; two daughters, Natalie Goodrich and Elizabeth Goodrich (John Adams) of New Bern; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Cornerstone Assembly of God on Saturday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor John Watford officiating. Facemasks and social distancing would be appreciated.

Ann Korp Woodruff, 92, Golden, CO
Ann Korp Woodruff, 92, passed away in her sleep on October 4, 2020 of metastatic melanoma in the home of her daughter, Leslie, in Golden, CO. Ann was born on April 22, 1928 at home in Phillipsburg, NJ to Matthew Dennis Korp and Kathleen McKinley Korp. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School, NJ; attended Rider College, and graduated from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). Ann was married for 67 years to her husband, Ralph Edmund Woodruff, who predeceased her in 2015. Ann taught elementary school for 28 years in Franklin Twp. and Clinton Town Public Schools (Hunterdon County, NJ). After retirement she and Ralph moved to New Bern, NC, where they were faithful members of St. Paul Catholic Church. Ann and Ralph were avid world travelers culminating in a round-the-world cruise in 2010. After his passing, Ann spent summers in Colorado and winters in Arizona. Ann never stopped reading; she loved the written word.
Due to the pandemic, services will be held at a later date. At that time Ann will be buried with Ralph in New Bern, NC. Mrs. Hazel Mills Heath, 83, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2020. A lifelong resident of Jones County, Ms. Hazel was a retired secretary with Craven Community College. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved being with her family. She was a great cook who spoiled her family, especially her grandchildren, with her baked treats. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her husband, Asa B. Michael George “Mitchell” Ragan, 98, New Bern, NC
Mr. Michael George “Mitchell” Ragan, 98, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020. A native of Allegany County, PA, Mitchell, as he was affectionately known, met and married the love of his life and settled in New Bern. Mitchell was a proud US Marine, and a devoted member of American Legion Post 24 for over 70 years. The Annex to the Post was named in his honor. He was the Post, District, and State Vice Commander. Mitchell was also an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree. Mitchell, along with his wife, Grace Powers Ragan, opened and operated the first Dairy Queen in Eastern North Carolina. They managed to open a second store in Havelock. They won many State and National Awards for his outstanding service. Grace and Mitchell also established the “Michael & Grace Powers Ragan/Dairy Queen Nursing Scholarship Endowment” at Craven Community College with the hope of giving back to the community that gave so much to them. Sadly, Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Marie Powers Ragan in 2014, along with his brothers John and Martin Ragan.

Joyce Hancock Rachid, 86, New Bern, NC
Mrs. Joyce Hancock Rachid, 86, of Emerald Isle, passed away Friday, September 18, 2020 at the home of her daughter surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born on March 15, 1934 in Bridgeton, NC to Albert James Hancock and Dollie Springle Hancock. She was a kind, gentle woman who deeply loved her family, church, and time spent at the beach.
Joyce graduated Valedictorian from her class at Bridgeton High School in 1952. She then met the love of her life, Joe, to whom she was married for 51 years until his death in 2005. Joyce started her career at Montgomery Ward in downtown New Bern and worked her way up to billing supervisor. She then began working at Phillips Plating Company in Bridgeton where she was the business administrator and corporate secretary for 35 years until her retirement in 2005.
Joyce and Joe were dedicated members of St. Paul Catholic Church. They chaired the Bishop’s Annual Appeal for 20 years and gave countless hours of their time to other projects. Joyce was proud to be a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Monsignor Michael A. Irwin #1704 for over 52 years. She held various roles during this time, such as the Office of the Regent for four consecutive terms. On the State level, she served as State Treasurer, First and Second State Vice Regent, and then State Regent from 2002 thru 2005.
What brought her the most joy was crafting her well known flower and Christmas arrangements for the annual CDA Christmas boutique, which she Chaired for many years. Joyce loved Christmas and crafting was her favorite pastime.
Sadly, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph M. Rachid, her brothers, Walter and Jimmy Hancock; and her sisters, Sadie Weaver, Lois Pugh and Opal Gibble.
The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2020, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Pollock-Best Funeral Home and other times at the homes of her daughters. Clifford Russell Griswold, 82, New Bern, NC
Clifford Russell Griswold, 82 of the River Bend community of New Bern, NC, formerly of New Jersey passed away peacefully at home into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior on Labor Day, September 7, 2020 surrounded by his wife and loving family.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a celebration of Cliff’s life at his dear Pollocksville Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 2 PM. Inurnment will be held at Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls, NJ at a later date.
Born in Trenton, NJ, Cliff raised his family in East Brunswick before moving to Monroe, and retired to New Bern in 2004. He worked as a forklift operator for Coca-Cola in New Brunswick for 40 years, belonging to the Teamsters Local # 812 in New York City, and Local #125 in Wayne, NJ. He also cherished time spent helping his wife, Eileen with her restaurant in Jamesburg.
Cliff always enjoyed the little things in life, and was sure to stop and smell the roses every day. His family and friends will always remember the happy tunes he whistled while preparing meals. In Cliff’s home, Fridays meant leftovers night, and his family much anticipated his latest delicious creation. Cliff very much loved tending to his robust garden with Eileen. Time spent bird watching and soaking up the warm sun made Cliff happy as could be. A Jersey boy at heart, Cliff loved Jersey tomatoes, especially paired with Hellman’s mayonnaise! Other favorites were Jersey corn and Taylor ham, which he looked forward to family and friends bringing him on their visits. A world traveler, Cliff loved to try new things, after just a small bit of convincing!
A man of deep faith, Cliff was known for his sweet, affable disposition and for his generous spirit. Friendly as could be, he enjoyed striking up conversations with strangers who became friends wherever he went. An active member of the Pollocksville Presbyterian Church, Cliff served as a deacon there, and was instrumental in starting the Filling Station, a local food pantry that helps families in need.
The son of the late Richard and Hannah (nee Bickel) Griswold, Cliff was the beloved husband and ‘diamond in the rough’ of 56 years to Eileen E. (nee Fisher) Griswold; loving dad of Brenda Galante and her husband Frank, and the late Russell Todd Griswold; treasured Poppy of Frank R. Galante and Rachel Galante, dear brother-in-law of Pfr. Brent W. Fisher and Margaret Srack and her husband, the late John. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews, and by many loyal friends. Cliff was predeceased by his many cherished pets.
Though Cliff may be gone from the world, his legacy is in those that he has left behind. In his honor, please practice random acts of kindness, and remember to pay it forward! Hugh Bryan Mills, Jr. 82, passed away at his home Friday, September 4, 2020. A lifelong resident of New Bern, Hugh was the son of Hugh Bryan Mills, Sr. and Martha Kirven Mills. He was a US Army National Guard veteran and retired from Weyerhaeuser. He was a lifelong member of the NRA, Craven County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, and National Wild Turkey Federation. He loved the outdoors and hunting. Hugh was a talented woodworker and craftsman: making canoes, small wooden boats, furniture, and was known for his hand-made custom knives and guns.

Richard D. “Dick” Ringuette, 69, New Bern, NC
Richard D. “Dick” Ringuette, 69, of the Fairfield Harbour Community, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at his home. A native of Attleboro, MA, Dick spent most of his married life in the Virginia area. One of his favorite accomplishments was winning a film editing Emmy at a local Washington, DC TV station. Dick enjoyed writing books, working in his yard, and playing cards with the neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Annette and Raymond Ringuette; along with his brother Kenny and sister Elaine Melynk. Dick is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janell Fuller Ringuette; his son, Jon Ringuette, of Vancouver, BC; and his brother, Paul Ringuette, and wife Laurie, of Palm Harbor, FL.

Duke McKellar Barron, 74, New Bern, NC
Mr. Duke McKellar Barron, 74, passed from this life Saturday, August 29, 2020. He was born February 6, 1946 in Lewisburg, TN, to Flones McKellar Barron and Bennie Louise Mangrum Barron. Duke worked as a contract telecommunications cable splicer and continued his craft until retirement, after which he opened a business at home powder coating. Sadly, Duke was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Duke McKellar Barron, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Audrey Dunn Barron, of New Bern; his daughters, Patricia Barron and Meredith Faulkner Moore; and his son, Wayne Barron, as well as grandchildren, Christa, Michael, Carr, Ashley, Amber and Austin, and his great grandchildren, Mina, October, Iris and Aubrey. He is also survived by his Tennessee cousins, W.C. Barron, Dawn Barron, Ida Barron Tindell and Amy Barron and their families.

George F. Geraghty, Jr., 94, New Bern, NC
George F. Geraghty, Jr. 94, passed away at his home Wednesday, August 19, 2020. A native of Nassau County, NY, George was a proud US Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, and retired from Alexander & Alexander as a Fire Protection Engineer. After a brief retirement to Vermont, George and Lucie moved to warmer climates in 1995 and settled in the Greenbrier Community of New Bern. George was an avid golfer and was a member of the Emerald Golf Club. He was also an active member of the Fairways West HOA, serving as President.
Soon after moving to New Bern, George and Lucie joined the Alpenverein of New Bern, a local club dedicated to those interested in the Alpine Region of Europe. George and Lucie were both active members and participated in the annual Oktoberfest for 14 years. George also served as Vice-President for eight straight years.
Early in his membership George developed a friendship with two other members, George Rockwell and George Spang, which lasted for almost 25 years. They were all proud World War II veterans and were known by friends in New Bern as “The 3 Georges.”
Sadly, George was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn A. Fry and his twin brother, Burt Geraghty.
George is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lucie Wild Geraghty; his step-son, Joey Delisa of Rochester, NH; his sister-in-law, Babs Geraghty of West Rupert, VT; and several nieces and nephews, Jeanine Gravelle, and husband Richard, of New Bern, Matthew Fry and wife, Lisa of Senioa, GA, Michael Geraghty and wife, Judy of Lake Elsinore, CA, Susan Geraghty of West Rupert, VT, Thomas Geraghty and wife, Kate of Hebron, NY, Steve Geraghty and wife, Janet of Salem, NY, and James Geraghty of West Rupert, VT..

Jennifer “Jen” Stallings Rouse, 36, New Bern
Jennifer “Jen” Stallings Rouse, 36, passed away much too soon on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. A longtime resident of Craven County, Jen worked at Carolina Home Medical, and loved being with family and friends. Jen and Jason enjoyed their time at the beach, and she spoiled her dog Reece every chance she had. Jen was a kind soul, giving of her time and talents, and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Harriet Lane Guion May, 95
Harriet Lane Guion May, October 17, 1924 – August 3, 2020), died peacefully in her home on August 3. Known to her friends as Hattie Lane, she was born in New Bern, youngest of the three children of Bess and Haywood Guion. After graduating from New Bern High School she attended Women’s College, now UNC Greensboro. As a young teenager, she had developed a crush on Cecil May, a friend of her older sister. As a college student, she was delighted when he began to reciprocate her interest. They were married on May 17, 1944, while he was on leave from the Army Air Forces. She then returned to Women’s College and graduated in 1945, while he returned to duty as a B-25 bomber pilot. He remained in the Air Force after WWII, and they moved around the country for a few years before he left military service. They came back to North Carolina in 1948, and she worked as a laboratory technician in Durham while he went to Duke University Law School. When he graduated in 1952, they returned to New Bern.
Hattie Lane enjoyed raising three children in New Bern, teaching them to love the water as much as she did: swimming, skiing and boating. She was also a Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and chaperoned school field trips and summer beach trips. In the early sixties, when her children were older, she went back to work in a medical office, where she remained for eight years. Always energetic, in her late 40’s she learned to ride horses. Not long after that she took up golf and even scored a hole-in-one. Hattie Lane always had time, though, for her parents, her children, her friends and especially for her beloved Cecil. She saw the best in everyone she knew, and she brought out the best in all of us.
An active member of First Presbyterian Church, she was made a Lifetime Member of the Presbyterian Women in 2006. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina.
Hattie Lane and Cecil were married for 68 years, until his death in 2013. She is survived by her children, Cecelia Collins May Scott and husband Peter; Haywood Guion May; and Harriet Lane May and husband Paul Nowicki; as well as two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and their children. She was predeceased by her brother, Tom Guion, her sister, Pattie Guion Patterson, and her daughter-in-law, Vicky Vendrell May.
Tiffany Holt, Esther Cooper, Regina Monroe, Carolyn Boggan and Barbara Saunders were her trusted, constant and caring companions in her last years.

Mrs. Frances McCraw Walker, 99 years young, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020. A longtime resident of Craven County, Frances was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of New Bern, where she was known for her volunteer work. She was a member of the New Bern Women’s Club, and the National Association of Social Workers. Frances was an independent woman from the get-go, joining the US Army Air Corp following high school. She followed that up with her college education, earning her Masters Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garnett Harold Walker, and her sons, Donald J. and John David Walker.

Mr. Paul R. Dorf, 80, of the Taberna Community, passed away suddenly Wednesday, July 15, 2020, after suffering a stroke. A longtime resident of Upper Saddle River, NJ, Paul and Pam retired to warmer climates in 2019. He was the owner of Compensation Resources Inc. Paul grew up in Hewlett Harbor, NY, and graduated from Hofstra University, joined the US Marine Corps, and received his Masters from the University of Bridgeport. He loved life, never met a stranger, and was always smiling. He will be missed by all those that knew him for his jokes and good conversation. In his spare time, he enjoyed painting watercolors and acrylics, and walking Jameson and Angel. In a short time, his thoughtful, caring nature and joy of life, gave him friends of neighbors and fellow dog park walkers.

Louis retired after a 41-year career in the Army National Guard and traveled for 10 years with his wife visiting all 50 states. Louis was a kind man always willing to help and he will be missed.

Clyde “Gray” Swindell Jr, 55, New Bern, NC
Clyde “Gray” Swindell Jr, 55, lost his fight to cancer Saturday, June 13, 2020 at his home with friends and family by his side. He was born May 13, 1965 in New Bern, NC to Clyde Gray Swindell Sr and Kathryn Edwards Swindell. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Anne Hobbs-Swindell; his children, Caroline Taylor Swindell, Alyson Rose Swindell, Carson Hollis Garrish and PeeDee Swindell; along with his parents, Clyde Gray Swindell Sr. & Kathryn Edwards Swindell. He was the oldest of three and survived by siblings William Todd Swindell and Kathryn Lynn Morgan and husband Christopher Paul Morgan; and his nieces & nephews; Dillon Kyle Chappell, Sarah Renee Hobbs Blair, Rebecca Ann Hobbs, Avery Kathryn Morgan, & Garrett Christopher Morgan.
Gray served in the US Navy for four years out of high school. He went on to become an incredibly successful salesman, sales manager and general manager of automotive dealerships in New Bern, NC. Gray’s impact in his industry as well as in his community is widespread. He has been a member of Temple Baptist Church for many years and volunteered at the local animal shelter. While Gray loved every animal he met (and tried to take them all home), he had a special connection and affection for pit bulls. His smile was contagious, and laughter filled every room. Gray carried with him an infectious spirit of love and faith. Gray was the true definition of generosity; the habit of giving freely with expecting nothing in return. He was an amazing mentor and beacon of light to many. The past four years Gray has had an intensely difficult battle of colorectal cancer but his optimism and vulnerability during the battle was an inspiration to all he encountered. His legacy will live on forever.
Gray was an amazingly passionate soul. His life was a reflection of his love for God, family, country, and friends. He was a gifted writer and debater with a strong online presence. He was published in three national magazines during his cancer journey. Gray had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge & even pursued online classes at Liberty University shortly after his initial diagnosis. Gray was a talented athlete with an intense fervor of football & basketball. He was a diehard Washington Redskins & Carolina Tarheel fan.
The family will be receiving visitors Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 6:00 pm at Pollock-Best Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Temple Church with Darryl Radford, Aaron Golden, and Dave McCant officiating. A private burial service will be held at the Hobbs Family farm in Corapeake, NC the weekend of June 20-21, 2020, weather to determine exact date later in the week. Mrs. Jeannie L. Carroll, 67, of the Greenbrier Community, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2020. A native of Bergen County NJ, Jeannie was a graphic designer, and a professional photographer. She loved to work in her flower beds, cook, sew, and do some interior design work. She and her husband Bob moved to New Bern in 2013 from Honesdale, PA. Jeannie was a kind soul, a loving wife and mother, and could brighten up any room. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Dorothy Walsh England.

Mrs. Mildred Rose Jackson Edwards, 93, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on February 4, 1927 to the late Agnes Rose Jackson and Marvin Lenwood Jackson in Nash County, NC. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who taught her grandchildren what it meant to be a beautiful person on the inside and out. Mildred was an active member of First Baptist Church of New Bern. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cyril Edwards, Jr., and sister, Margaret Ann Jackson Purkerson.

Mr. John A. Scurlock, 88, passed away Friday, April 3, 2020. A lifetime resident of Craven County, John was a faithful member of Riverdale United Methodist Church and a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Cherry Point and enjoyed being on the water. He loved woodworking and especially carving. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Ann in 1997.

Edward Charles King, 43, New Bern, NC
Edward Charles King (Jan. 22, 1977 ~ Jun. 3, 2020); friend, brother, son, uncle, and Chef, left too soon, but not before bringing joy to everyone who knew him. An avid golfer, he played on the golf team at Johnston & Wales University while studying Culinary Arts, where he graduated in 1998. He completed his internship at Kiawah Island & Resorts in South Carolina. While at Kiawah, he worked in the banquet kitchen, preparing meals for professional tennis tournaments, World Cup of Golf, and various celebrity charity events. Most notably, he had the honor of preparing meals for President Bill Clinton and his Secret Service team. Upon completion of his culinary studies, Ed worked in various restaurants and private clubs throughout the state of North Carolina. His most memorable position was that of Executive Chef for 11 years at the Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach, NC. Most recently, he helped open and serve as Chef at Cypress Hall, in historic downtown New Bern, NC.
Ed was loved and cherished by many friends, family, and strangers whenever they met him. He will be remembered as a docile, peace and fun-loving individual that treated everyone he encountered with respect and love. He is survived by his parents, Robert “R.C. and Helen Romanus King; his brother Rob; niece, Sophia King; his girlfriend, Kim Hall; and numerous extended family members on both sides.

Myra C. Thomas, 90, Rocky Mount, NC
Myra C. Thomas, formerly of New Bern, died Thursday, June 4, 2020.
Myra grew up one of 10 children in the highlands of the Allegheny mountains. She was well known and greatly admired throughout New Bern and surrounding areas, working tirelessly in the Men’s department at JC Penney for decades, retiring in the early 1990s. However, for a hardworking woman made out of mountain steel and raised during the Great Depression, retirement was not in her vocabulary. Therefore, she “retired” to her next career and took her beautiful smile and excellent customer service skills to over 20 years at the cash register of Pak-a-Sak (Piggly Wiggly).
When Myra finally did retire in her mid-80s, you could find her every day at Chick-Fil-A, giving out hugs and smiles, as she enjoyed her black coffee and chicken sandwich, in the same seating area, which became affectionately known as “Grandma’s Booth.”
Thinking of Myra brings visions of her early life in Pocahontas County, WV. Her demeanor reflected the natural beauty of the mountains in autumn when they burst with red, gold, and orange as if aflame with praise for their Creator. Yet there is the stillness, quietness, and simplicity of life found in tiny Greenbank,WV, that also matched her inner spirit. She remains the epitome of a Mountain Beauty – what a treasure.
Although Myra led a life full of more than her share of difficult challenges, she never allowed them to break her spirit. The internal beauty, kindness, and joy that overflowed from her were untouched and unmarred. Her family has been the main beneficiaries of her character and fortitude – we carry her legacy. She was always most proud of her family and was fiercely loyal to us.

She is survived by her children, Agnes Quinn (Jeff), Susan Valder (Jeff) and John Bowen; daughter-in-law, Judy Bowen; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Quinn (Lauren), Erik Quinn (Natalie), Caroline Wuestman (James), Samantha Sheets (Nick) and Haley Bowen (Rusty Tripp); fourteen great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Silver; sister-in-law, Betty Bowen Arthur; and brother-in-law, Harry Bowen (Mary).
Mrs. Bowen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed fellowshipping with her church family, Faith Free Will Baptist Church, and enjoyed working in her flower garden and really loved family get-togethers. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. Louise Davis Wisnewski, 94, of the Carolina Pines community, passed away Monday, May 25, 2020. A native of Edwardsville, PA, she was the last surviving child of Samuel and Grace Hill Davis. She was a longtime resident of Levittown, PA, where she drove a school bus for special needs children and raised her family with her husband Joe. As she raised her family she was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Levittown, and enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her husband Joe.

Dr. Daniel D. Garner, 72, New Bern, NC
Dr. Daniel D. Garner, 72, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2020 at his home, with his family by his side. A native of Scioto County, Ohio, Dan was the son of Merwin and Lola McGlone Garner. Dan earned his BA in Chemistry from David Lipscomb College, and his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the Univ. of Tenn. He was the Chief of the Forensic Science Lab of the ATF from 1973-1987, followed by President of Cellmark Diagnostics in Germantown, MD from 1987-1998. Never one to slow down, Dan returned to Washington, DC as Chief of the Forensic Services Section-Criminal Div. for the DOJ, from 1999-2012, and then to Pres. and CEO of Houston Forensic Science Center, in Houston, TX. He was a world renowned Forensic Scientist, holding many significant positions, and will be remembered for his knowledge and insight. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his sister, Christiene Hickerson.

William G. (Bill) Lewis, 82, New Bern, NC
William G. (Bill) Lewis, 82, of New Bern, NC died at his home in Carolina Pines on May 24th, 2020 after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Anne Lewis, they shared 27 years of marriage together. Born in Ossining, New York, Bill lived a life of service and kindness, serving his country in the U.S. Navy, his community as a police officer for over 30 years, and his family, friends and faith. He will be remembered by family, friends and colleagues as a humble, honest, fair man who you could always count on. A veteran officer of the Briarcliff Manor, NY Police Department, he served with distinction for more than 30 years, receiving the village’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor, for going above and beyond the call of duty. Bill was a Cub Scout leader and also a long-time coach for youth soccer in Ossining, and always made each player feel special and part of the team.
Bill was a parishioner of Annunciation Parish in Havelock, NC, and lived his life with strong, quiet faith. He loved playing golf, something he was able to do a lot since he retired to the Carolina Pines community. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, sometimes winning, sometimes losing, always having fun, and it was truly a marvel to behold the gentle giant carry on with his friends like they were 10-year olds. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne, sons Scott of New York City, and Patrick (Kristen) of Middlebury, CT, stepson Mark (Jane), stepdaughter Vicki (Marc), and beloved grandchildren Andrew, James and Caitlyn who meant the world to him, and brother Robert, of Cortland Manor, New York, along with countless friends, colleagues and neighbors.

Lifelong New Bern resident, Teri Dawson Campbell, passed away peacefully at her home on May 17, 2020. Teri was born to the late Haywood Sim Dawson and Virginia Pelham Dawson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Buddy Dawson. Teri attended school in Craven County graduating from New Bern High School, then East Carolina University receiving an undergraduate degree in Nursing. She became a registered Nurse, obtained a license in real estate, and eventually made her career choice in education working in the Craven County School system for 20 years. Teri excelled in her many duties & responsibilities, but especially enjoyed working as a guidance counselor to special needs students often remarking how rewarding it was to help students with personal challenges.
While working and helping others, she lovingly took care of her family, and was a faithful and active member of Christ Episcopal Church teaching Sunday school. She advised the Episcopal Youth and served on many commissions. She was actively involved in the community volunteering her time and efforts with the many civic & charitable organizations.
Teri enjoyed cooking, playing bridge, and planning travel outings with family & friends. She especially liked taking photographs of those same family & friends during those outings and other special occasions. We will forever cherish the memories captured through her thoughtful pictures.
Above all though, Teri was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She proudly nurtured her daughter, Kim, into becoming a caring, beautiful person. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren, Campbell & Jack grow up, closely encouraging them and instilling her kind ways while remaining faithfully in love with her husband, Ed.
Teri’s natural affection for other’s welfare resulted in many lucky individuals being treated as if they were her own children always putting them before herself. Her grandchildren will always remember “Nana” as being a loving, reliable grandmother, mother, and friend. She was so loving throughout Campbell and Jack’s childhood, their high school and college friends felt as though Teri was one of their grandparents, too. As Teri checked in on them with protective support, kind texts, pictures, and Facebook posts.
Teri was truly the finest, kindest of people and will be genuinely missed by her friends, family, and community.

William Benjamin Brinkley, 89, Greenville, NC
William Benjamin Brinkley, 89, formerly of New Bern, died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 9, of natural causes.
Mr. Brinkley was born in New Bern to the late Addie Bell Brinkley nee Bunch and Edmond Eunice Brinkley. He was one of six children and the youngest of three boys. For most of his life, Mr. Brinkley went by the name “Buck” – a nickname bestowed by his father and older brothers, who frequently took Mr. Brinkley deer hunting. Mr. Brinkley later confided that he didn’t enjoy the pastime and eventually declined hunting trips to stay home with his mother, who he overhead wishing for at least one of her sons to keep her company.
Mr. Brinkley enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained at Ft. Knox as a tanker before shipping out to serve in the Korean War. Upon his arrival in Korea, however, he was surprised to see there were no tanks, and instead fought with an infantry unit.
Mr. Brinkley worked as a chemical engineer for DuPont in Kinston until his retirement. As a retiree, Mr. Brinkley enjoyed antiquing trips up and down the Eastern seaboard with his wife Anne, and selling their finds at antique shows, as well as spending time with his family.
He was known for his humor, which ranged from the merely silly to the flamboyant. While courting Anne, with whom he worked at DuPont, Mr. Brinkley once affixed a large banner to the side of the building. When Anne arrived to work later that day, the message “I love you Anne” greeted her and the rest of the oncoming shift, setting the plant abuzz.
To his children and grandchildren, it seemed Mr. Brinkley had an endless supply of stories. A favorite was the tale of his first job working at Pinnix Drug Store on Hancock Street in New Bern, where an 11-year-old Mr. Brinkley stood on a crate to operate the cash register. He started working the candy counter and was promoted to ice cream, working his way up to filling prescriptions, all while attending elementary school. He recalled frequently hightailing it to the back of the store to hide, lest his underage status be discovered by the authorities!
Mr. Brinkley is survived by his wife, Anne Elizabeth Brinkley nee Cheek; four children from his first wife the late Doris Christine Brinkley nee Register – Robbin Figgins, Bettina Brinkley, Billie Hearn and Ben Brinkley; two step-children – Janet McKee and David Sutton; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Terry Stewart nee Brinkley of New Bern.
Mr. Brinkley will be cremated, in accordance with his wishes. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21 at his residence, 104 Lamont Road, Greenville, NC 27858.

Charles Allen Hargett, 83, New Bern, NC
Mr. Charles Allen Hargett, 83, passed away at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Jones County to Daniel and Dila Dixon Hargett on March 1, 1937 and graduated from New Bern High School. After graduation, Charles enlisted in the US Air Force, and was stationed in the Strategic Air Command at Westover Air Base in Chicopee, MA. After his honorable service, Charles started his career in the Eveready Battery Company, first, as a machine operator and working his way up to Supervisor of Quality Control and Analytical trouble-shooter. During this time, his desire to help people led him to attain his EMT certification, so he could assist the plant nurse.
Charles was dedicated to volunteer work as a member of the Greenville Jaycees, fundraiser for the Jaycees Burn Center, assisting with the Greenville Christmas parades, Fourth of July Celebrations, and serving as an usher for Rudy Alexander at ECU. As a proud member of the Jaycees, Charles earned the Spoke and Spark Plug Awards, served as State Director, and was named Jaycee State Ambassador for Life in recognition for his tireless efforts. He was also recognized by the American Red Cross for giving over 120 pints of blood during his lifetime.
Sadly, Charles was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers, and three nephews.

Some of his happiest times were spent at the cottage on Chocowinity Bay, playing with his dogs; playing Santa Claus for the Moose Lodge and church groups; traveling to the beach; and vacations with his wife and daughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruby Pittman Lawrence, father Thaddeus Raefield Lawrence, mother, Nellie Lawrence, son Thad Russell Lawrence Jr. and siblings Watson Lawrence and Arwhnia Lawrence Best.
Russell owned and operated the CORNER GRILL in downtown New Bern for over 35 years. He was known for his hot hamburger plates, chicken and pastry, cakes, pies and numerous other dishes. He enjoyed sharing his culinary skills with friends, family and many others. While in the restaurant business, he also fed many who were in need, never asking for anything in return. He served in WWII in the Navy prior to returning to the New Bern area to raise his family. He served his country with pride and loved to tell stories about his time during the war. He was a faithful servant of God, who served as a deacon of Sherwood Forest FWB church where he was a founding member. He was a member of the Gideons and helped to start a jailhouse ministry.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 -12:00 PM Saturday, May 16, 2020, and other times at the home of his daughter, Gail Banks. Funeral services will be 12:00 PM in the Pollock~Best Chapel. A lifelong resident of Craven County, Vivian was a member of New Haven Free Will Baptist Church and enjoyed working in her flower beds. Margaret Rose Nicholson, 66, of the Carolina Pines Community, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2020. A native of Latrobe, PA, Margaret and her husband Bill Tussey moved to the New Bern area from Pine Grove Mills, PA in 2015. She received her BA from Slippery Rock State College and earned her Master’s in Business from Saint Francis University. Margaret was a business manager for a radio and communications company for most of her career. She volunteered whenever she could, lastly with the Craven Literacy Council in New Bern. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her parents, Edna Stout Nicholson and Leroy Nicholson, along with her sister, Janet Claar.

Denise A. Killoran, MSW, LSW, CSW, 70, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2020. A native of Queens, NY, and a longtime resident of E. Setauket, Long Island, NY, Denise was the daughter of Elizabeth and Donald Killoran. She earned her Masters from Stoney Brook University, and was a beacon of hope to those she counseled. Denise was a faithful friend of Bill W. for over 40 years, enjoyed working in her garden, and loved her dogs. Denise was a kind and giving soul who loved life and was a friend and confidant to many. She was a loyal friend and a great daughter, sister and aunt. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and playing the lottery. Rebecca Bryan Renfro, 76, passed away April 6,2020 at CarolinaEast Medical Center, New Bern, following a lengthy decline in health. Rebecca was born January 27, 1944. She was preceded in death by her parents, Byron Bryan and Doris H. Bryan of Mt Olive. She is survived by three brothers, Eugene Bryan and wife Peggy of Miller,MO, Bill Bryan and wife Scottie of Mt. Olive, NC and Charles Bryan and wife Julia of Baltimore, MD. She had nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
Rebecca graduated from Marymount College in Virginia. She enjoyed a professional career in real estate as she resided in Atlantic Beach, Kitty Hawk and currently in New Bern, NC.
Rebecca was an avid supporter and advocate for the humane society of New Bern and took great joy in nurturing her family cats. She has been a skilled equestrian and also had acquired her pilots license. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed being involved in politics.

William Lawrence Meekins, 92, Grantsboro, NC
Grantsboro – William Lawrence Meekins, 92, formerly of New Bern, died Sunday, April 5, 2020 at Grantsbrook Nursing & Rehab Center.
He served in the US Army for 4 years during World War II and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a loving and caring father and grandfather.
Mr. Meekins was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Meekins; parents, William Albert Meekins and Annie I. Tucker Meekins; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Tooker.

Mr. John A. Scurlock, 88, passed away Friday, April 3, 2020. A lifetime resident of Craven County, John was a faithful member of Riverdale United Methodist Church and a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Cherry Point and enjoyed being on the water. He loved woodworking and especially carving. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Ann in 1997.

Marsha P. Reel, of North Myrtle Beach, SC passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2020. She left this world with her family by her side.
Marsha was born on December 11, 1942 in New Bern at the Old St. Luke’s Hospital to Edward W. Paul, Jr. and Norma J. Paul. She graduated from New Bern Senior High School and attended East Carolina University. In 1962, she married her college sweetheart, Thomas E. Green, III and had 2 children, They were married for 27 years before unforseen things in life lead them down different paths. She then married her childhood sweetheart, Robert E. Reel on August 10, 1990 and became step-mother to his 2 youngest daughters and 2 older sons. Sadly, she was pre-deceased by her parents, Edward W. Paul, Jr. and Norma J. Paul and her brother Edward W. Paul, III of Elizabeth City, NC.
Marsha was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and friend to so many. She retired from BB&T and after the loss of her beloved parents and brother, chose to move to South Carolina for a fresh start and to enjoy her retirement.
She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Reel of N. Myrtle Beach,South Carolina; her daughter and son-in-law, Johanna L. and Michael L. Hicks and grandsons, Trevor J. Green of Minnesott Beach NC, Bradley E. Southard and Nicholas G. Perkins of Missouri and great-grandson, Aiden M. Rice of Missouri; her son Thomas E. Green, IV of N. Myrtle Beach,South Carolina, her ex-daughter-in-law, Tammy Green of Selma, NC, and grandson Thomas E. P. Green of Cary, NC, step-daughter Tara J. Lefebvre of Florida and granddaughter Brielle M. Mr. Phillip M. Bennett, passed away just 2 days short of his 74th birthday. A lifelong resident of New Bern, Phil was an Engineering Tech at Cherry Point and enjoyed spending time with his family. Phil was very active with BSA, both as a child and while his sons were Scouts. He ran the chains at West Craven Football games for over 25 years, and volunteered with the Board of Elections. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Jane Bennett, his father Leland Bennett, and his mother and step-father Virginia M. Frank and Delbert Frank.

A native of Monroe County, IA, Tim was a US Navy veteran who served his country honorably for over 20 years. He followed that up with retirement from Civil Service at MCAS-Cherry Point. Mrs. Wanda H. McLaurin, 85, went to her heavenly Father Thursday, January 23, 2020. She was born in Durham, NC to Earl and Pearl Henry and graduated from Durham High School. Following that, she attended Campbell College and New Orleans Baptist Seminary. While raising her family with her husband Horace, she attended night school at NC Central University and UNC-Greensboro where she earned her Masters in Education.
Wanda became an elementary school teacher with a career spanning over 25 years in the NC School system, including Durham, Alamance, Carteret, Hertford, Aberdeen, and Craven districts. After retiring, she continued to teach at Craven Community College helping adult students obtain their GED. As a minister’s wife, she touched many lives with her music, teaching, serving as a cub scout den leader, church choir member and Sunday School teacher.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Bryan Huffman officiating. The family will gather for a reception following the services. Alfred Noel Fowler, 93, New Bern, NC
Alfred Noel Fowler, Captain, USN, passed away on January 14, 2020. He was a resident of New Bern, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn. Alfred, known as “Punk” to family and friends, was born on August 29, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa. He married his high school sweetheart, Kathryn (Katie) Shadle, on September 8, 1945. The profound love they shared as teenagers would last 70 years. He loved to tell tales of their lives together, of his boyhood with his brother Bob, and of their family connections, instilling a vision of perseverance and adventure that took the couple from their Iowa roots to a career in the military that included 16 moves before they finally settled in a Washington, D.C., suburb after his Navy retirement in 1974.
Captain Fowler graduated from Parks Air College (now Parks College of St. Louis University) in 1948 with a degree in Aviation Operations. He was commissioned an Ensign, USN, and after completing Navy flight training was designated Naval Aviator in 1949. With Katie’s loving support, his career as a naval aviator evolved for the next 26 years. His memoir, Hurricanes to Antarctica – Tales of a Naval Aviator, highlights their journey and the wonderful yet challenging life of a military family. His companion book, Poems From Punk – The Complete Collection, tells the story of young love and dreams for the future during an uncertain time for our country.
Captain Fowler served as a pilot, navigator, and after attending the Naval Postgraduate School, a flight meteorologist in the Navy Hurricane Hunter squadrons based in Miami and Jacksonville from 1950-1957. He and his crew accomplished many low-level penetrations of the Atlantic area hurricanes. At that time, there was no other way to determine the location, size, and intensity of these dangerous storms. His shore assignments included a tour as NROTC instructor at Tulane University and attendance at both the Naval War College and the Air War College, where he earned a master’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. He served as Executive Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge including a deployment to the South China Sea during the Vietnam War. He then completed a Joint Chiefs of Staff tour at the Alternate Military Command Center in Fort Ritchie, Maryland.
In 1972 he became the Commander U.S. Naval Support Force Antarctica and Commander Task Force 43. He was the first captain in that job following a series of seven admirals starting with Adm. Richard Byrd. The military task force command included ship, aircraft, station and logistics operations, as well as the assignment as Senior U.S. Representative in Antarctica. He spent two six-month summer operating seasons “on the ice” and oversaw the completion of building a new station at the geographic South Pole. While serving as a LTJG in the Navy, his son, Tom, was able to travel to McMurdo Station, Antarctica, for a visit. On February 13, 1973, father and son flew in a C-130 to the South Pole and became the first ever father and son to be at the South Pole together.
After Captain Fowler retired from active naval service he took the position of Deputy Division Director of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation. During his 14 years at NSF, he returned to Antarctica several times to oversee management, logistics, and science support operations, as the responsibility and funding for the national program had been shifted from the Defense Department to the NSF. He retired from civilian government service in 1988.
For the next 11 years, Captain Fowler was employed at the American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C., where he established the office and served as the first Executive Secretary for the International Council of Managers, National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP). He was directly involved in national and international Antarctic affairs for 25 years. He is the author of COMNAP – The National Managers in Antarctica, a memoir about a special group of people from various nations who were involved with the governance and stewardship of the continent of Antarctica. He has been honored by the naming of the Fowler Peninsula, a 100- by 200-mile geographic feature of the ice-covered coastline of West Antarctica on the west shore of the Ronne Ice Shelf south of the Weddell Sea. Captain Fowler’s military honors include the Legion of Merit Medal, Navy Commendation, and Antarctica Service Medal. He was a longtime member of the American Meteorological Society, the U.S. Naval Institute, and The Antarctican Society. Al was a member of the West New Bern Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. Previously, Al and Katie belonged to the Fairfax Presbyterian Church where he was proud to serve as a deacon. They lived in the Mantua neighborhood in Fairfax, Virginia, for 38 years.
Here are his two most important lessons for life. First, “When flying a big multi-engine airplane very low over the ocean in a hurricane, keep your wings level.” And second, “Never forget that when it comes to having a wonderful life, the more you give, the more you get.” He often said, “The secret to a happy marriage is choosing the right spouse.”
Captain Fowler is survived by a son and three daughters: Alfred’s son, Tom (Marilyn) Fowler and their daughters, Beth (Matt) Maxwell, their children Will and Kate; and Carol (Evan) Renneker and their daughters Madeline and Evy; and son, Rob Fowler; and Alfred’s three daughters: Becky Fowler; Susan Fowler, her daughters, Natalie (Curt) Douglas and their children, Ethan, Isabella, and Tyler; and Lindsay (Joe) Scardino, and their daughter, Rosalie; and son Justin (Pamela) Brown and their children Tyler (Cindy), their son, Leon; Chandler, Brynn, Gabriella, and Nathan; and Alfred’s daughter Janine (Ken) Sellers, and their son, Kurtis Hunt. In addition, he leaves behind a host of loving extended family members.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 25, at West New Bern Presbyterian Church at 3 pm with Pastor David Fuentes officiating. A reception will follow immediately at the family residence. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. The family wishes to thank Carteret Health Care Home Health & Hospice for providing exemplary care. Robert Stanley Hakkila, 80, Morehead City, NC
Robert Stanley Hakkila, 80, died Monday, January 13, 2020 at Croatan Village. He was born March 5, 1939 in Quincy, MA, son of the late Aarne and Louise Fiekers Hakkila.
He retired from WCVB television in Boston as engineer and audio man. He served in the US Navy, and was a member of Croatan Free Will Baptist Church, where he played the harmonica for several years. He loved bluegrass music and played the banjo and harmonica at many local venues, both in Newport and Hubert where he was known as “Banjo Bob.” He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his garden and his hummingbirds.
Surviving is his wife, Mary McClellan Hakkila; two sons, Timothy Kenneth Hakkila and Jeffrey Aarne Hakkila, both of Plymouth, MA; two daughters, Michele Boyd (Steve) of Virginia and Melissa Elaine Lowe (Jeff) of Louisville, KY; two sisters, Nancy Damon of MA and Carol Allen (Jim) of TN; eight grandchildren, Finley Lowe, Ainsley Lowe, Samantha Hakkila, Lillian Hakkila, Timothy Aarne Hakkila, Mary Elizabeth Hakkila, Cassandra Marie Hakkila (Danien Lawson), and Shane Joseph Hakkila; and two great-granddaughters, Kiristen and Keira.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lillian; two sons, Robert Stanley Hakkila, Jr. and Scott Louis Hakkila; and his siblings, Dottie, Virginia, Donald and Kenneth.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Croatan Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Bryan officiating.

Rev. Lonnie Grady Tucker, 88, Trent Woods, NC
Rev. Lonnie Grady Tucker, 88, passed away Friday January 10, 2020 at CarolinaEast Medical Center. He was born in Greensboro, NC, November 23, 1931, one of ten children, to Lonnie Curtis Tucker and Della Barns Tucker.
Grady served his country in the United States Air Force and retired after 20 years of service as a Master Sergeant, in 1971. He later became an Original Free Will Baptist Minister and received his doctorate in Theology. His most cherished and proud moments were those spent with his family.
Grady is survived by his wife Barbara Tucker, his children Gary Tucker (Dawn), Pam Sullivan of Raleigh, NC, Michele Cleland (Troy), and Portia Hartzell (Paul) Of Culpeper, VA, his grandchildren Tosha Tucker, Quinn Tucker, Hannah Tucker, Lauren Cleland, and Shelby Pratt, and his great grandchildren Mia, Kaleb, Lexi, Mylee, and Braden. He is also survived by his brother Floyd Tucker and his sister Elaine Sellaro.
The family will receive friends at Pollock-Best Funeral Home 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, January 12 and other times at the home. The funeral will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 13 at St. Mary’s Free Will Baptist Church, with burial following at Greenleaf Memorial Park, with full military honors.

Mrs. Ilene Phillips Disosway, 96, New Bern, NC
Mrs. Ilene Phillips Disosway, 96, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at her home. A native of Floyd County, VA, she was the daughter of Nora and Ezra Phillips; lived most her life in Fancy Gap, VA and graduated from Hillsville High School. She moved to the Burlington, NC area where she attended Elon College and met her husband, D.J. Disosway. They moved to the New Bern area, and raised their family. Ilene was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church for over 75 years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald, and her brother Dallas Phillips.
Graveside services for Ilene will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Greenleaf Memorial Park, followed by her memorial service at 11:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev. George William Olsen, 96, Havelock, NC
LCDR George William Olsen, US Navy Ret., 96, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at his home. George retired from the Navy in 1968, having served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII as well as during the Korean War. He was a proud American who served his Country well. After his separation from the Navy in 1968 he continued to serve his country working as an electronics engineer at NARF/NADEP on board Cherry Point MCAS. George was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and the VFW Post 7315. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Rose Thomas Olsen and his brother, Paul Olsen of Minnesota.
A celebration of George’s life will be 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev. Juli Gicker-Anderson officiating.
