New Bern Civic Theatre - Annual Report

New Bern, NC – The historic Athens Theater, lit only by a single ghost light, lays quiet and motionless during the shelter in place order which has now been extended to May 8th. All shows and rehearsals have been suspended until further notice but that does not mean work has stopped. NBCT Board of Directors and staff have been keeping busy taking this time to work on strategic planning, updating policies and procedures, and streamlining internal operations through conference calls, emails, and zoom meetings. “There are so many projects that we would like to get done, (cleaning out costumes, props, […]

Awakening: Musings on Planetary Survival

April 26, 2020
Awakening Book of Poems by Sam Love

Awakening: Musings on Planetary Survival is a collection of environmental poems by Sam Love. The book has been nominated for England’s prestigious Laurel Prize which honors a collection of eco and nature poems. The subjects range from meditations on Mother Earth to the changes in migratory patterns caused by climate change. Far from a doom and gloom autopsy of the contemporary environmental crisis, Awakening has some fun with everything from imagining the craziness of shipping bottled water 6,000 miles to how bacteria evolving for a counterattack must be laughing at us who think we have dominion over them. After reading […]

April 16, 2020
Jean Sanders - New Bern Illustrated

There are so many talented people living among us, so we decided to start a new feature story “Meet the People”. After following Jean Sanders, creator of New Bern Illustrated, for years on social media, I wanted to shine the light on her wonderful photography and illustrations! The images have been thought provoking and uplifting. Wanting to learn more about Jean, we did an email interview. Here’s the Q & A’s: Where are you from and when did you relocate to New Bern? Why did you choose New Bern? I am originally from Stamford, CT, but we came to New […]

Shop Local for Food and Essentials

March 23, 2020
Living Well Down East

Concerned for our community, especially our neighbors with immune system conditions, we wondered where and how they could safely get food and other supplies during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We heard that the big box stores were offering online shopping and curbside pickup. After confirming with each store, last week, I wrote an article to let people know about those services. When I think about groceries, I automatically think about Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Walmart, etc. Not because I like shopping there. Honestly, I get stressed out before I even step foot into the store. I go because it’s one […]
