Long time Craven County Register of Deeds, Sherri B. Richard, announced she will retire effective July 1. Richard served the citizens of Craven County in the Register of Deeds Office for nearly 22 years and her retirement will be effective just a few days shy of 17 years as Register of Deeds.
Richard was appointed by the Craven County Democratic Executive Committee in 2006 to complete the four-year term of the late Becky Thompson upon her retirement. Richard has since stood for election four times and is in the middle of her fourth term. Richard states she has seen many changes in the Register of Deeds Office during her tenure including the electronic recording of documents. She reports she was able, with the support of the Craven County Board of County Commissioners, to back-scan records dating back to the year 1739 into a digital format to make them available for searching online.
“My work as the Craven County Register of Deeds has always been more than a job to me, it’s been a passion. I am honored to have served, not just the citizens of Craven County, but people all over the world who have business with the Register of Deeds Office,” said Richard. “I will truly miss the many good people with whom I have worked, both through my office, and through NCARD (the North Carolina Association of Registers of Deeds).”
Richard was presented with the NCARD Shining Star Award in 2015 at the NCARD Annual Conference in Concord for “Loyal Dedication, Commitment and Service to County, District, and Association.”
North Carolina General Statute 161-5 directs the process for addressing a vacancy in the Register of Deeds Office. Richard was a nominee of The Craven County Democratic Executive Committee in the 2020 election.
