The Tryon Palace Foundation and the Home Builders Association of Craven and Pamlico Counties are once again joining together to host the 5th annual “Governor’s Challenge Cornhole Tournament” September 28 on the Tryon Palace South Lawn. The Governor’s Challenge is a fundraising event that benefits both Tryon Palace and the Home Builders Association. As of 2017, the annual event has raised more than $16,000 for the forthcoming Tryon Palace Garden Cottage.
The new Garden Cottage will provide education, work, and storage space that will expand garden programming and capabilities. The project is estimated to cost more than $500,000. The architects for the Garden Cottage are C.R. Francis/Architecture of New Bern.
“We are so grateful to the Home Builders Association of Craven and Pamlico Counties for their energy, creativity, and support in helping Tryon Palace reach the goal of building a Garden Cottage that will provide a proper work environment for our Gardens staff and volunteers,” said Nelson McDaniel, President, Tryon Palace Foundation. “They work so hard to maintain the beautiful grounds and gardens, and to provide quality educational opportunities to the New Bern community; they truly deserve a wonderful place to work, and the Home Builders Association is helping make that happen.”
The popular “Governor’s Challenge” event invites teams to spend a day playing their favorite backyard game in North Carolina’s favorite backyard – Tryon Palace’s South Lawn. The amateur-only event gives teams the opportunity to go head-to-head for the chance to win more than $1,000 in prizes. Team registration is open through the day of the event, with a $150 registration fee before September 21, and increasing to $175 the week of the event. Registration is per 2-person team, and includes lunch, snacks, beverages, and a swag bag. Register by calling (252) 636-3707, or online at TryonPalace.org/governorschallenge.
The key to the event’s multi-year success has been sponsorship from local businesses. The Home Builders Association continues to welcome sponsors for the 2018 tournament; sponsorship benefits include media promotion, cornhole boards displaying company logos, team sponsorship, and much more.
