Dr. Bobbi Kotrba at Craven Animal Hospital told me about the temporary animal shelter at the Craven County Fairgrounds, as she is one of the volunteer veterinarians along with some of her staff members.
I visited the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) Animal Rescue Team at the Fairgrounds today and had the pleasure of meeting Shelter Manager Janell Matthies. Please watch the video, as Janell provides detailed information about the shelter.
The HSUS Animal Rescue Team is providing a temporary home for pets of Pamlico County residents who were displaced or are restoring their homes. Pet owners can stop by to visit their animals to see how well their pets are cared for.
The shelter is also caring for the animals found during and after the Hurricane. So if you’ve lost an animal during the storm, please visit them at the Craven County Fairgrounds to see if your family pet is there.
They have animals that have been surrendered that will be available for adoption at local animal shelters in the future.
The shelter has dogs, cats, a horse, a rabbit, a tortoise and other animals. The pets receive toys, social time, and walks.

I was very impressed with the cleanliness and caring volunteers!
Special thanks to Janell Matthies, Shelter Volunteers and the Humane Society of the United States, and PetSmart Charities for helping our community during this difficult clean-up period.
